Red Sox Call Up Nick Sogard Amid Trevor Story Injury

After yet another close loss where the offense failed to deliver, the Boston Red Sox are turning to the farm for a mid-series boost.

According to Tommy Cassell of Worcester T&G Sports, utilityman Nick Sogard is expected to be called up from Triple-A to join the team in Atlanta. The 28-year-old is slashing .269/.417/.454 with five home runs, 23 RBI, and four stolen bases in 36 games for the WooSox.

With Boston's struggles on the infield, it felt like only a matter of time before Sogard got the call to join the big-league club. A left-handed bat that can reliably fill in at any infield position, his presence on the roster will allow Chad Tracy to take some pressure off of the scuffling Caleb Durbin at third base in a platoon role.

With Worcester this year, Sogard has spent the majority of his time at first base (15 games) but has also logged appearances at shortstop (nine games) second base (five games), third base (four games), right field (two games), and left field (one game).

Since becoming interim manager, Tracy has now called up two longtime minor league favorites in Sogard and fellow utilityman Mickey Gasper, who has looked comfortable at the plate in his five games since joining the team, batting .412.

Sogard is coming up as a result of an injury to Trevor Story. The Red Sox shortstop was given the night off on Friday, which Tracy attributed to a groin issue that he has dealt with all year that they are "always monitoring." Story, who is hitting just .206 with a .547 OPS in 41 games, was ultimately placed on the injured list as the corresponding move to Sogard. It seems likely that his brutal start to the year is related to this injury.

Sogard will join an infield utility group that features right-handed hitters Andruw Monasterio and Isiah Kiner-Falefa. If the club opts to do something drastic and move off of Story at shortstop in some capacity, all three could factor in at the position, or could man second base while Marcelo Mayer assumes shortstop duties.

Sogard has appeared in 61 MLB games and holds a career .266/.321/.335 slash with 17 RBI. On top of a solid versatile glove, he will bring speed and baseball savvy to a club in need of some new energy.
