MLB power rankings: From May gray to June … bloom or gloom?

The Padres still have a good record.

They are not a good team.

At least not at the moment.

They've lost six of seven, seven of 10 and have slipped to 5½ games behind the short-handed Dodgers in the NL West.

The Padres' bullpen has been every bit as good as advertised, and the rotation has held its own given the obstacles - no Joe Musgrove yet and Nick Pivetta's unexpected injury - but the offense is showing signs that the bubble is bursting in San Diego.

The Padres rank 28th in runs scored, 30th in batting average (.218), 29th in on-base percentage (.293), 28th in slugging (.363) and 29th in OPS (.656).

And it's June 1, so it's not early anymore, either.

"The good thing about baseball, it’s a very long season," Padres manager Craig Stammen said after Sunday's loss in Washington. "We’ve played two months, and we’ve got four to go, and we’ve got four months to change the narrative on our hitting group and how we’ve done so far. And we’re working behind the scenes to get that done. It’s not about hope, it’s about working towards it and figuring it out, and I know these guys are committed to that.

"We’re committed to that, and we’re going to keep committing to that until the season’s over."

1 | Atlanta Braves (40-20; Last week: 1)

Ronald Acuña Jr., who missed 12 games with a hamstring strain, is making up for lost time with five homers in his last four games.

2 | Los Angeles Dodgers (38-21; LW: 3)

Tarik Skubal is already back to playing catch two weeks after his NanoNeedle Scope, so the Dodgers are hoping for a similar quick path back to the mound for Blake Snell and loose bodies in his elbow.

3 | Milwaukee Brewers (35-21; LW: 4)

The Miz means business: Jacob Misiorowski struck out 57 batters in May, a Brewers franchise record. He also allowed one earned run and held hitters to a .109 average.

4 | Tampa Bay Rays (36-20; LW: 2)

Who doesn't like the Trop? The Rays are 21-6 at home and have won six straight home series.

5 | New York Yankees (36-23; LW: 5)

The Yankees are a fan of the Athletics' Sacramento digs: They scored 13 runs in the third inning on Sunday, one run shy of the best offensive inning in franchise history.

6 | Cleveland Guardians (34-27; LW: 7)

No a club you want to join: Tanner Bibee is the 12th opening day starter to get to June without a win since 1976.

7 | Chicago Cubs (32-28; LW: 9)

Yeah, the Cubs will be in the market for pitching this summer, what with Jameson Taillon (5.37 ERA) leading the majors with 19 homers allowed and Shota Imanaga (4.37 ERA) tied for fifth with 13 allowed.

8 | Pittsburgh Pirates (32-28; LW: 11)

One for one: The Pirates activated Ryan O'Hearn (quad) and placed rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin on the 10-day injured list with an elbow strain.

9 | San Diego Padres (32-26; LW: 6)

The Padres may have wanted to distance themselves from the Vedder Cup, but where would they be without those six wins against the "rival" Mariners?

10 | St. Louis Cardinals (31-26; LW: 8)

Is their bubble about to burst too? The Cardinals have lost seven of 10 and have a minus-10 run differential.

The rest

  • 11 | Chicago White Sox (32-27; LW: 15)
  • 12 | Arizona Diamondbacks (31-27; LW: 10)
  • 13 | Washington Nationals (31-29; LW: 12)
  • 14 | Seattle Mariners (31-29; LW: 21)
  • 15 | Philadelphia Phillies (30-29; LW: 17)
  • 16 | Cincinnati Reds (30-28; LW: 14)
  • 17 | Toronto Blue Jays (29-31; LW: 18)
  • 18 | Texas Rangers (28-31; LW: 19)
  • 19 | Sacramento Athletics (28-31; LW: 13)
  • 20 | Baltimore Orioles (28-32; LW: 23)
  • 21 | Minnesota Twins (27-33; LW: 16)
  • 22 | Miami Marlins (26-34; LW: 20)
  • 23 | Boston Red Sox (25-33; LW: 22)
  • 24 | New York Mets (26-33; LW: 26)
  • 25 | Houston Astros (27-34; LW: 27)
  • 26 | San Francisco Giants (23-36; LW: 24)
  • 27 | Los Angeles Angels (23-37; LW: 30)
  • 28 | Kansas City Royals (22-37; LW: 25)
  • 29 | Detroit Tigers (22-38; LW: 28)
  • 30 | Colorado Rockies (22-38; LW: 29)
