Cardinals Call-Up Top Prospect Infielder Amid Nolan Gorman News

The St. Louis Cardinals now have a new third baseman.

On Friday, the Cardinals called up No. 25 prospect infielder Blaze Jordan to make his MLB debut. As a result, they optioned struggling third baseman Nolan Gorman to Triple-A Memphis.

In addition to Jordan and Gorman, the Cardinals recalled right-hander Chris Roycroft and optioned pitcher Hunter Dobbins to Memphis as well. Infielder Ramon Urias has been transferred to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man roster for Jordan.

As for Jordan, he will be in the Cardinals' starting lineup tonight at third base and is batting eighth in the order. He will presumably take over as the starter at the hot corner for the optioned Gorman.

The inevitable has happened given the rough start to the season that Gorman was having as the starting third baseman. Gorman, 26, was in a 3-for-43 (.070) slump in his last 15 games. The lefty bat was slashing just .194/.279/.318 with a .597 OPS, seven home runs and 26 RBI in 62 games this season. Beyond this year, Gorman has been on a downward trend since 2023 when he had 27 homers and a .806 OPS. His OPS was below .700 in each of the past two seasons.

Meanwhile, Jordan was tearing it up at the plate in Triple-A. In 57 games, Jordan slashed .313/.373/.548 with a .921 OPS, 11 homers and 35 RBI. He earned this promotion to the major leagues to show the surging Cardinals what he can do.

The Cardinals acquired Jordan from the Boston Red Sox at the 2025 MLB trade deadline in exchange for left-handed pitcher Steven Matz.

Regarding Dobbins, the right-hander had a 3.63 ERA in four appearances (17.1 innings, two starts) in 2026.

The Cardinals also acquired Dobbins from the Red Sox this past offseason for first baseman Willson Contreras and $8 million.

Roycroft has given up five runs in 3.2 innings for the Cardinals this season. He has a 5.84 ERA in 24.2 innings with Triple-A Memphis this year.

St. Louis is a surprising 37-29 on the season and in the No. 1 National League Wild Card spot.
