SF Giants reportedly open to listening to offers for marquee players, but can they sell?
Languishing near the bottom of the National League standings near the midway point of the season, the Giants — perhaps unsurprisingly — are open to listening to trade offers for infielders Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman, ESPN reported late Monday.
Starting pitcher Robbie Ray and infielder Luis Arraez, both pending free agents, are also clear candidates to be moved before the MLB trade deadline on Aug. 3.
Both Adames and Chapman have no trade clauses in their contracts, per Spotrac, presumably giving them a say in where they are moved if the Giants receive a reasonable offer for either of them.
Devers has no such protection, but his exorbitant 10-year contract, which has seven years remaining at an average annual value of $31.35 million, might prove difficult for the Giants to shed.
With the sixth-highest payroll in MLB, per Spotrac, the Giants had hoped to compete for a playoff spot this season after missing the playoffs each of the previous four years. Instead, at 29-43, the Giants have the second-worst record in the NL and open a six-game road trip this week, 8½ games out of a playoff spot.
Although their overall offensive numbers have improved of late, the Giants still have several issues, notably drawing the fewest walks (169) and stealing the fewest bases (21) in MLB over 72 games. Their team ERA of 4.52 ranks 22nd in the big leagues, and their 48 errors are the third-most in MLB.
Still, the underwhelming seasons of two of the Giants' three highest-paid position players, Devers and Adames, have been a contributing factor to the team’s struggles.
Entering the Giants' three-game series against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park, the 29-year-old Devers, in 72 games, is hitting just .235, well below his career average of .273. A two-time Silver Slugger award winner, Devers' 0.2 WAR rating is sixth-best among all active Giants players.
Adames, 30, is in the second year of a seven-year, $182 million deal. Although not necessarily known as a player who hit for average, Adames, who has hit .229 in his first 70 games this season, also has just 11 homers and 29 RBI so far, putting him on pace to finish well shy of the 31 homers and 99 RBIs he averaged between the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
Adames' total salary in 2025 and 2026, per Spotrac, was $21 million, but that is set to increase to $28 million over the final five years of the deal.
The 33-year-old Chapman, who is in the second year of a six-year, $151 million deal, struggled during the first two months of the season but has been one of the Giants' most productive hitters of late, raising his average over the last 11 games from .227 to .261. In that time, he also had five home runs and 18 RBI.
Ray, 34, is in the final year of a five-year, $115 million deal he signed with the Seattle Mariners in Dec. 2021. Ray was selected to the All-Star Game last season, but in 14 starts this season, he is 4-6 with a 4.42 ERA in 73 1/3 innings.
Arraez, meanwhile, is a candidate for the All-Star Game this year, as he entered Tuesday with a .319 batting average, fifth-best in MLB.
