SF Giants' Heliot Ramos set to take next step in recovery from quad injury

San Francisco Giants outfielder Heliot Ramos will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday as he continues his recovery from a right quad strain he sustained last month.

Ramos was injured on May 15 at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento as he tried to make a sliding catch in left field on a single by the Athletics’ Jeff McNeil in the fifth inning. Ramos initially stayed in the game and struck out in the top of the sixth before exiting prior to the bottom half.

Ramos was hitting .267 with four home runs and 20 RBIs in 44 games before his injury. Since then, the Giants have gone 11-16 and entered their series-opening game against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on Tuesday with the National League's second-worst record at 29-43.

Casey Schmitt has gotten the bulk of the work in left field since Ramos' injury, playing there in 22 of 27 games. He's also starting Tuesday's game in that spot, and it remains unclear what the Giants will do in left field once Ramos returns.

Starting May 16, Schmitt, in 27 games, has hit .279 with an .827 OPS, with 20 RBI and nine home runs. He’s also made just one fielding error in that time.

The River Cats are playing six straight games in Oklahoma City in a series that begins tonight and ends on Sunday.

In other Giants medical updates, starter Tyler Mahle (left hamstring strain) is starting tonight for Sacramento and is slated to throw between 60-65 pitches. Fellow right-hander Jason Foley (right shoulder) is also scheduled to pitch that game in Oklahoma City.

Outfielder Jared Oliva (left wrist hamate fracture), whose last game with the Giants was on April 14, is continuing his rehab with Sacramento.

In Arizona, outfielder Harrison Bader (left plantar fasciitis) is rehabbing. Right-hander Joel Peguero (left hamstring strain) is continuing his throwing progression that began last week, and right-hander Keaton Winn (right elbow strain) will continue his rehab with the plan of starting a throwing progression by the end of this weekend.
