Eli Manning Had Perfect Response To Jalen Brunson Debate
Eli Manning quickly settled a silly sports debate on social media.
Jalen Brunson led the New York Knicks to their first NBA championship since 1973. The point guard earned Finals MVP honors by scoring 45 points in Saturday's title-sealing Game 5 win over the San Antonio Spurs.
An epic postseason cements Brunson's place among New York sports royalty. Even Google asks if you meant "Captain Clutch Brunson" when searching his name.
Brunson's late heroics reminded fans of another star New York athlete. Eli Manning led the Giants to two Super Bowl wins, anchoring a pair of game-winning drives to twice defeat the New England Patriots.
Which star is better under the brightest spotlights? Gridiron Media asked social media followers whether they'd trust Brunson or Manning more with the game on the line.
Rather than compare their clutch genes, Manning asked a fairly important question that should resolve the discussion.
"What sport?" Manning replied.
Eli Manning or Jalen Brunson?
Manning could have saved everyone time by making that point before New York sports radio shows ran with the topic.
To the dismay of former Giants star Tiki Barber, WFAN co-host Evan Roberts argued that Brunson surpassed Manning because the Knicks' championship "defines an era."
"Because of the franchises," Roberts retorted when Barber asked for an explanation. "Because the Giants weren't looking for a savior."
ESPN New York's Chris Carlin made a similar case for Brunson on Tuesday morning.
"What Jalen Brunson has done already, I think is a greater achievement than what Manning did in his career in winning two Super Bowls," Carlin said. "I don't want to knock Eli for it. It's not at all that. It's more about the overall meaning of the championships."
On the other hand, Bart Scott called it "blasphemous" to suggest one championship matters more than two. The former NFL linebacker also argued that Brunson would have needed to defeat Michael Jordan to match Manning upsetting Tom Brady's undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
"Eli Manning is the most famous quarterback, in my opinion, in the history of New York football," Scott declared.
Fans also joined the debate on social media.
"Eli threw an absolute dot TWICE in 2 different Super Bowls … and one of them was to a receiver who couldn't catch anything in practice the week leading up to the Super Bowl," a fan wrote. "It's Eli."
"Love both, but in this situation I gotta pick Brunson," a fan said. "Eli would have to rely on whoever he's throwing the ball to make a play, but Jalen can get a bucket by himself."
