Blue Jays' John Schneider Facing Backlash After Trey Yesavage Decision

The Toronto Blue Jays entered Thursday's series finale at Fenway Park with momentum on their side. Consecutive wins over the Boston Red Sox, including a 6-1 victory Tuesday and a 3-0 performance Wednesday, had Toronto sitting at 36-38, third in the AL East, with a chance to move within one game of .500 and complete its first road sweep of the season.

Trey Yesavage got the start and was dominant through the first seven innings. However, things took a bad turn for the 22-year-old in the eighth inning.

Manager John Schneider elected to send him back to the mound for the eighth, the first time in the young pitcher's MLB career he had been asked to work that deep into a game, and the decision immediately backfired.

Boston launched two home runs in the inning, erasing Toronto's lead and tying the game at 3-3. Blue Jays fans immediately voiced their frustration at Schneider for his poor decision-making:

"John Schneider masterclass!" one fan wrote.

"Left him in one inning too long," another said. "Had a great bounce back game but that momentum for him is gone now."

"Great managing. Putz," another fan added sarcastically.

"Fire Schneider," one fan posted.

"Why is trey going in the 8th??? We can't be doing this we need wins. Just put in rogers already," questioned another.

"Schneider doesn't know how to manage for a win… He's all about making friends with his players and chest bumps…what a joke," another added.

Yesavage finished the night with four hits, three earned runs, no walks and six strikeouts in 7.1 innings.

Fortunately for Toronto, the game did not end in defeat. In the ninth inning, Brandon Valenzuela delivered a go-ahead RBI double to put the Blue Jays back in front, and the bullpen closed out a 4-3 victory to complete the sweep. The rookie catcher, who got the starting nod in place of Alejandro Kirk, came through with one of the biggest hits of his young career.
