Two-Time MLB All-Star Rips Rafael Devers After Latest Antics

Two-time MLB All-Star Josh Harrison didn't hold back his feelings against San Francisco Giants star slugger Rafael Devers.

Devers was dealt to the Giants just over a year ago as the Boston Red Sox grew frustrated with him and him not wanting to play first base. Boston opted to deal him to gain financial flexibility, but also to get rid of a potential clubhouse headache.

With the Giants, Devers has had some success, but recently, he caused some controversy by being noticeably angry being taken out of the game at the top of the ninth inning.

After the incident on the field, Harrison believes Devers needs to be held accountable for his actions.

"Superstar or non-superstar, you have to be held accountable," Harrison said on Foul Territory on June 22. "I don't care if you are better than this guy. To me, I don't think the superstar should get a pass because he's a superstar. You put your boots and your clothes on just like the next man. It's something you need to be chewed out for.

"Just because you make a lot of money and you're good doesn't mean that you get a pass. That is where the game is gone, a lot of these guys get paid and get passes on being held accountable for things."

Harrison believes Devers should have known he was coming out for a pinch runner, and it shouldn't have been a surprise, which is why the reaction is unnecessary.

Devers was waving the bench away when a pinch runner came out for him in the top of the ninth inning after drawing a walk, with the Giants down 2-1. So, it made sense to pinch run Devers for a faster runner, but the slugger wasn't pleased with the decision and protested it.

Although many fans were critical of Devers protesting the pinch runner coming in, the Giants didn't think it was a huge deal.

Giants manager Tony Vitello said after the game on June 21 that Devers waving off the pinch runner didn't warrant a talking to. However, Vitello believes the decision for the pinch runner was something he felt gave them the best chance to try and tie the game.

"I don't have a problem with Rafi," Vitello said. "It's not like [Devers] can't score on a double, [but] now you're 2-2 [if we were to tie] you'd like to have what you think your best players are out on the field. In a perfect world, like to see Cox go get a bag at second … but at the very least, if you go down, you go down swinging with your fastest guy over there."

The Giants ended up losing 2-1 as they couldn't score the runner, and Devers' protest of the pinch runner became the storyline, which is just the latest of a frustrating season for San Francisco.

The Giants are 31-46 and are expected to be sellers - and could even deal Devers - ahead of the August 3 trade deadline.
