Mac Jones Makes Telling 49ers-Patriots Comparison
Quarterback Mac Jones has had the privilege of playing for two NFL teams that consistently make postseason runs, the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers.
Jones has perspective on which organization is better.
During an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show” on Tuesday, Jones said the 49ers have been the best organization he’s played for in his career.
“I think this is my No. 1 question that I’ve been asked,” Jones said. “Look, I love (general manager) John (Lynch), I love (head coach) Kyle (Shanahan), the York family.
“It’s the best organization I feel like that I’ve played for in terms of just top-to-bottom greatness, so far, and I don’t like leaving good people and I hope they enjoy having me there and I’m excited for this year, to be honest.”

The Patriots selected Jones with the No. 15 pick in the 2021 draft. He earned a Pro Bowl nomination in his rookie season, leading the team to a postseason appearance and a 10-7 record in the regular season.
Jones took a step back in his final two seasons with the Patriots. He finished with an 18-24 starting record in New England before he was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He went 2-5 as a starter for the Jaguars.
In 2025, Jones signed a two-year contract with the 49ers worth $7 million. He went 5-3 as a starter when Brock Purdy was sidelined with a toe injury. Jones threw for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Because of his performance with the 49ers, there has been talk that Jones could be traded this year. Jones says he’s not worried about the future, but wants to work on improving as a quarterback.
“A lot of that was offseason talk,” Jones said of potentially being traded. “Anything’s possible, right? I mean, the trade deadline’s not until a little bit through the season. But I try not to keep up with it and I really just want to keep getting better. Like you said, I played decent last year.
“I think I can play a lot better, which is what I’m striving to do this summer, improve on my technique and see if that helps me and elevates me to get a big deal or something in the future. I always say be where your feet are and my feet are in San Francisco, and I like it a lot.”
There’s an outside chance that Jones could earn the starting job in San Francisco if Purdy doesn’t return to the way he played in 2023. Jones’ best bet isn’t to ask for a trade this offseason, it’s to dare the 49ers not to play him.
