Red Sox Yankees Sweep Just Flipped Trade Deadline Plans

The Boston Red Sox are all of a sudden back in the playoff picture.

Boston got off to a horrible start and fired manager Alex Cora, among other coaches. The Red Sox's struggles continued, but as of late, Boston has played better, including a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees at home, which ended with a walkoff win on Sunday Night Baseball.

Following the Red Sox's sweep of the Yankees, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal believes Boston is now one of the most interesting teams in the league. Not only are the Red Sox showing how good they can be, but Boston may flip from being sellers to buyers.

"The Red Sox are really interesting in the American League," Rosenthal said on Monday's episode of "Foul Territory." "They are outside of the teams I mentioned. They're four and a half games back in the wild card, but we saw this weekend what they can do when they pitch.

"If they get another bat, and maybe it's somebody who can be a solid guy on the infield, then they maybe get interesting, and maybe they go on a run. They have an easy schedule coming up, it's teams like the Mets, the Nats, Angels. They have a chance here to do something."

Rosenthal believes the Red Sox could be a surprise team that gets hot and sneaks into the playoffs, and would be a team no one would want to play.

It's a major change to Boston's season, as the Red Sox looked like they were on their way to a disappointing season, and trading away the likes of Jarren Duran, Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, and others.

However, after the sweep of the Yankees, Boston is now 39-46 and could be a surprise buyer ahead of the August 3 trade deadline.

With the Red Sox sweeping New York, Boston is back in the playoff picture.

The hope for Boston is that the four-game sweep at Fenway Park over the weekend will propel them into a lengthy winning streak.

"Let's hope so," Duran said postgame on Sunday. "It's baseball and stuff happens, but it was a good sweep. Four hard-fought games, and we've just got to keep carrying it over. We've got a lot of energy on this team, and I'm excited to see what we can continue to do."

Red Sox interim manager, Chad Tracy, meanwhile, knows there is still a lot of season left, but he hopes Boston can build off this momentum.

"There's a long way to go," said Tracy. "We talked to the guys, just said we still got a lot of work to do, but we have some momentum now and maybe the best momentum we've had. We haven't had a four-game winning streak, so this is the best momentum we've had. We got to just try to keep riding it for as long as we can. We're playing really good baseball."

The Red Sox will begin a three-game home series against the Washington Nationals on Monday.
