Blue Jays Make Max Scherzer Announcement Before Mets Game

Max Scherzer signed with the Toronto Blue Jays on a one-year, $3 million deal in February to play his 19th season of professional baseball. Scherzer has had a difficult 2026 MLB season, with the 41-year-old having the worst season of his career so far.

After never finishing a season with an ERA above 5.00, Scherzer had the worst ERA of his career in 2025 with Toronto (5.19). Now, the Parkway Central High School graduate has an ERA over 10 (10.23) while posting a 1-4 record. The 41-year-old has also spent more than six weeks on the injured list due to a combination of right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation.

On June 17, the three-time Cy Young Award winner (2013, 2016, 2017) was scratched before his scheduled start against the Boston Red Sox due to back spasms. Scherzer has been on the IL since then, but on Monday, an update was provided on the health of the two-time World Series champion.

Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith took to the social media platform X to provide updates on the Blue Jays' injured players. Nicholson-Smith wrote that right-handed pitcher Yimi Garcia, who is on the 60-day IL, is feeling slightly better and is playing catch. He also wrote the same for Scherzer, saying he is playing catch with a possibility to "get off the mound," which means to throw from an elevated pitching slope.

"Yimi Garcia is feeling a little better per John Schneider," Nicholson-Smith wrote on X. "He's playing catch today. Max Scherzer also feeling good per Schneider. He's playing catch today with tentative plans to get off the mound tomorrow."

Toronto will host the New York Mets at Rogers Centre at 7:07 p.m. ET.
