Triston Casas Suffers Additional Injury in Prolonged Rehab

Boston Red Soxfirst baseman Triston Casas will not be back in action any time soon.

The 26-year-old has once again been shut down from hitting as he looks to get back on the field after over a year on the shelf. This time, Casas is dealing with a new wrist injury, per interim manager Chad Tracy, via Tim Healey of The Boston Globe.

The most recent update on Casas's progress had been a positive one. He entered into the early stages of a hitting progression just a couple of weeks ago, taking light swings off a tee and against soft toss. This was the first time Casas had swung the bat since an April intercostal strain on his left side of his ribs shut him down during the final stages of his rehab from knee surgery.

To say Casas's career has been marred by injuries would be an understatement. Since being called up in 2022, the young infielder has played in just 251 games. After a breakout season in 2023 where he slugged 24 homers across 132 games, Casas has made just 92 appearances for the Red Sox.

It began with an unfortunate rib injury in 2024, when torn cartilage in his rib forced him out for the majority of the year. Then in 2025, the former first round pick made it just 29 games before tearing his left patellar tendon thus ending his season.

With the knee injury, the hope was that a slow build up through spring training and a minor league rehab assignment would be enough for Casas to get his feet under him and rejoin the team in Boston just a month or two into regular season play. But with the additional two injuries shutting down his rehab, it feels unlikely that we see the lefty slugger back in the big leagues in the foreseeable future.

In his stead, the Red Sox have gotten massive production from first base replacement Willson Contreras, who was snubbed from the All-Star Game despite an impressive .285/.378/.536 slash line and 19 home runs through the first half.
