Four running backs to battle for one available spot on Patriots roster
Four running backs – one job available.
The battle for the third halfback position on the New England Patriots roster should be a good one that will play out in front of our eyes during the preseason.
New England has to feel good about the top two guys on the running back depth chart. Veteran Rhamondre Stevenson and second-year man TreVeyon Henderson combined to pile up 1,514 yards and 16 TDs on the ground with 67 catches for 566 yards and three more scores.
But unlike 2025 when veteran third-down back Antonio Gibson was penciled as the change-of-pace guy at No. 3, the Patriots will hit training camp in two weeks with a fight on their hands. They can't go into the opener with just two backs on the 53-man, and there is confidence that a strong candidate currently resides in the running-back room.
Rhamondre Stevenson likes what he sees
"It's a healthy competition in there. We all work off one another. We all help one another," said Stevenson, the dean of the group heading into his sixth NFL campaign. "We talk. We take things from each other's games. Hopefully it can be a better year in that running back room for all of us.
"We're ahead of where we were last year at this point."
Here's a look at the four candidates in the race to the 53-man roster.
Jam Miller
Injuries cut the 2025 season short at Alabama for Miller, who was drafted in the seventh round this spring by the Patriots. Built in the Stevenson mold, he runs tough and grinds out the yards between the tackles. He has NFL size at 210 pounds.
Terrell Jennings
The Florida A&M product has held down the fourth or fifth back role in New England, each of the past two seasons, bouncing between the practice squad and the active roster. The good news is that Jennings hung on through the coaching change. He has played in 10 career games.
Lan Larison
The 2025 undrafted free agent out of UC Davis gets a "re-do" after breaking his foot last summer in camp and spending the year on injured reserve.
Myles Montgomery
After a superb final season at Central Florida, the 5-foot-10, 205-pounder signed as big a contract as you will see for an undrafted free agent, pulling in nearly $300,000 guaranteed.
