Red Sox Demote Player After Trade With Tigers

Jahmai Jones is getting another major league opportunity after the Boston Red Sox acquired the versatile outfielder from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for a player to be named later on Tuesday. The move gives Boston another right-handed bat as it looks to strengthen its bench for the second half.

To clear a spot on the active roster, the Red Sox optioned utility player Nate Eaton to Triple-A Worcester. Jones joins Boston after being designated for assignment by Detroit and is expected to report to the major league club immediately.

Jones appeared in 57 games for the Tigers this season, hitting .137 with two home runs. Although his production dipped in 2026, the 28-year-old has shown the ability to contribute against left-handed pitching and offers experience at multiple positions.

The Red Sox are betting a change of scenery can help Jones regain the form he showed last season. His ability to play first base, second base and all three outfield spots gives manager Chad Tracy another versatile option off the bench.

Eaton heads back to Worcester after appearing in 14 games with Boston this season. The 29-year-old hit .125 while filling a utility role, but he remains valuable organizational depth because he still has minor league options.

Boston entered Tuesday with a 46-48 record, sitting third in the American League East while remaining in the Wild Card mix. The front office has continued making incremental moves to improve the roster ahead of the trade deadline.

Jones is out of minor league options, making this an important opportunity to establish himself with his new club. If he provides the right-handed production Boston is seeking, he could carve out a steady role for the remainder of the season while Eaton remains available for a future call-up.
