Christian Gonzalez's Contract Leads Eight Storylines Ahead of Patriots Camp

With veterans reporting to Foxborough a week from today, the countdown to New England Patriots Training Camp 2026 is on.

A roller-coaster offseason is now in the books, and despite a handful of major moves, questions remain. Here are eight key storylines to follow on the practice fields at Gillette Stadium as camp unfolds in August and beyond.

What is Christian Gonzalez' plan?

He is the most important defender on the roster. And he's set to be paid under $3 million this year. Any questions would be wiped away with a big money contract extension.

Gonzalez allowed just a 64.4 passer rating when targeted in 2025, tied to a 68.4 PFF coverage grade (31st among 114 qualifying cornerbacks).

Can Will Campbell take the heat?

The second-year offensive tackle was abused on the field in the playoffs and has heard about it regularly ever since. Then, in April, the team expended a second straight No. 1 pick on a tackle. Expect every Campbell camp rep to be dissected and scrutinized. Hope he's ready for it.

Campbell allowed 14 quarterback pressures in Super Bowl LX. That is the most any player allowed in a single game in the entire 2025 season, including the playoffs, according to Next Gen Stats.

Will Gabe Jacas ever show up?

The only unsigned second-round pick in the game has yet to clear up his status and availability.

Will Kayshon Boutte be a Patriot?

The receiver came to June mini-camp and participated. He wasn't happy, though. Trade rumors persist. The team might tell him to just be happy with the No. 3 role. Or else.

Boutte caught 33 passes for 551 yards and 6 touchdowns on just 46 targets in 2025, averaging 16.7 yards per reception. Per RotoWire, he led all qualified pass catchers in yards per target (12.0).

Could a free safety emerge?

The Patriots – three different head coaches – have yet to find a true free safety to adequately replace Devin McCourty, who last played in 2022. Craig Woodson and Kevin Byard are players, sure. But they are both more comfortable as box safeties.

Are the kicker and punter safe?

You can chalk up some of Andre Borregales' early woes as a place-kicker to rookie nerves. He needs to show he can settle in and be trusted. Punter Bryce Baringer, in the final year of his rookie deal, will be counted on for more consistency – right from the opening of camp.

How is Robert Spillane's health?

The linebacker's wheels made him so good last year, roaming sideline to sideline. He's coming off a foot/ankle injury that clearly hindered him in Super Bowl LX.

Spillane posted 97 total tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble in 13 games in 2025, earning a 76.3 PFF grade (12th of 88 qualifying linebackers). He missed the final four games of the regular season and most of the AFC Championship Game with the same ankle injury, before playing through it in the Super Bowl.

Will Mike Vrabel be a distraction?

The Dianna Russini issues that came to light after the Super Bowl seem to have dissipated. Coach Vrabel and the Patriots did a nice job of making it go away. The team is banking on this remaining a non-factor on the football front.
