Surdich on Bowling: New PWBA women’s tour coming

The Professional Women’s Bowling Association will be back in business in 2015 with a three-year commitment of funding from the United States Bowling Congress and the Bowling Proprietors Association of America.

The PWBA will have a nine-event tour running from mid-summer through early fall. Two PWBA bowlers who competed at the Battle at Black Oak recently were Missy Parkin and Lindsay Boomershine.

“The new PWBA Tour must fit the lifestyle balance today’s women need,” BPAA President Tom Martino said. “Women shouldn’t have to choose between pursuing their dream as a professional bowler and the stability of traditional home life. We want the new tour to be open for as many women as possible.”

An initial approval by the USBC and PBAA Boards of Directors calls for an equal investment by both boards. They will have guaranteed prize funds for the tour for 2015, 2016 and 2017. Events will have a Friday-Sunday format. They will be announcing the host centers for the 2015 PWBA Tour stops in the near future.

Black Oak senior no-tap

Black Oak Lanes in Tuolumne is holding its monthly senior 9-pin no-tap on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Entry fee is $15, and there are separate divisions for men and women for the high game pot and series. The lanes furnish coffee, cookies and popcorn during the afternoon. After you win a few bucks, you can go upstairs and try your luck. It fills up fast, so contact Sandy Taylor at (209) 928-9437 to reserve a spot.

Bowlers to Veterans tourney

Our association will hold its annual BVL veterans tournament on Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. with an entry fee of $10. There are five divisions for men, six for women and six for boys and girls, according to your average. All proceeds are for our veterans hospitals and clinics in California. On the day of the tourney, the association will raffle off a patriotic ball in red, white and blue. The winner will have his choice of weight when ordered.

The California State finals for the 2015 Helen Duval Veterans Tournament will be held at McHenry Bowl in Modesto on March 21 with two squads. The tournament is sponsored by the California USBC and Modesto USBC. Last year, our association gave more than $2,000 to BVL from the tourney and league participation.

League highlights

The Commercial Classic had Ernie Pinheiro picking up the 4-7-9 split. ... Bryan Rivas had a night a few weeks ago with a 299. A 700 series was the norm for Larry Valenti Sr. last week, as he rolled a 709 in the Guys and Dolls, a 733 in the Central Valley Nisei and a 722 in the Friday Night Handicap.

Budweiser Invitational

The Budweiser Invitational Tournament, hosted by our Merced/Atwater Women’s 500 Club, set an attendance record Sunday with 77 women participating. There were 500 clubs from Sacramento, Modesto, San Jose, Stockton, Hanford, Madera/Chowchilla, Sonora, Concord and Turlock. Results will be announced in next week’s column.
