Surdich on Bowling: Local 500 Club members sparkle at Camellia tourney in Reno
The Merced/Atwater Women’s 500 Club had two doubles teams and a singles bowler win their divisions at the 17th annual Camellia City 500 Club tournament held at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno.
A total of 188 ladies from various Women’s 500 Clubs in Northern California competed in four divisions, based on average. Marie Herrera won the Classic singles championship with a 769 total score for $86.40. LaDonna Stone was fifth with a 722 for $46.80. Also winning titles were Stone and Julie Egleston in Classic doubles with a 1,465 total for $74.25 each and Verna Fellows and Christina Perez in B doubles with a 1,450 score for $75.94 each.
Runner-up finishes were recorded by Phyllis Wallbaum in C singles (794 total, $72.68) and T.J. Jensen in D singles (740, $70.88).
Also, Janie Schropp and Kim Heller finished third in A doubles (1,407, $56.70), and Carol Almeida placed 10th in A singles (687, $27.56) and sixth in A doubles with partner Herrera (1,313, $31.50 each).
The 9-pin no-tap tournament was hosted by the Camellia City 500 Club of Sacramento.
Aqua groundbreaking – I attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Aqua Entertainment Center in Los Banos on Sept. 15 and had a chance to meet Yong Ye, the owner of the new facility; Frank Liao, the general manager; and Bertha Faria, executive director of the Los Banos Chamber of Commerce. There were many other dignitaries and chamber members in attendance.
Liao informed me that equipment should start arriving shortly and the opening could be in November or December. The bowling center will start with 10 lanes, a party room, laser-tag facility, an arcade with more than 100 machines, and a snack bar to serve soda, pizza and hot dogs. In about six months, a sports lounge should be up and running.
All who attended were excited with the bowling center and for the people of the West Side.
Silver Fox results – Two Modesto members of the Silver Foxes Bowling Club had a good payday at the recent singles tournament at Rancho Bowl in Santa Maria. Manny Simas was seeded fifth in the roll-off and ended up fifth overall in match play with a score of 981 for $160. Coming in sixth was Bill Briscoe with a 973 for $152.
Up next for the club is a singles event at Yosemite Lanes in Modesto on Oct. 10. You can join the club before the tourney.
McHenry senior no-tap – Bob and Kim Heller made a few bucks last Friday at McHenry Bowl’s senior no-tap. Bob placed second in the first high-game pot, and Kim had a fourth-place finish in the third game. Up next will be the 9-pin no-tap at Black Oak Lanes in Tuolumne on Oct. 2.
Remember when – The Los Banos Enterprise ran an article in 1973 about a State Bowling Champions of Northern California tournament in San Francisco. Joy Zimmerman, 12, placed second bowling with Joyce Bigham in the prep division. Manuel Leonard, 16, took first bowling with Wendy Alves and fifth bowling with Frank Alves in the senior division. Angeca Kester, 11, took third with her mother, Ilah Kester, in the adult/junior tournament.
