GV soccer earns draw with Atwater

Sergio Valencia lofted a desperation shot just over the outstretched hands of Atwater goalkeeper Andrew Ulloa to cap a wild comeback in the last nine minutes and earn Golden Valley a 3-3 draw with the Falcons on Thursday.

Eduardo Cebrero, Luis Lopez and Omar Duran found the back of the net for the Falcons (13-0-2, 3-0-1 Central California Conference), including a goal just six seconds into the game, as Atwater built a commanding-looking 3-1 lead.

Golden Valley (7-1-3, 1-1-2) never gave up, storming right back into the match as Cruz Melgarejo trimmed the lead to 3-2 after catching the Atwater defense out on a counterattack. Alfredo Arroyo also scored and Valencia added an assist to go with his late equalizer.

Merced 2, Pitman 1 in Turlock – Axel Ramirez and Uriel Gonzalez scored, and Saad Sohail made seven saves as the Bears (8-2-3, 3-1-0 CCC) bounced back from their first league loss with a big road win over the Pride (8-4-2, 2-2-0).

Le Grand 1, Waterford 1 in Waterford – Rodrigo Lua kept his goal-scoring run going for the Bulldogs (2-2-1, 2-1-1 Southern League) as they earned a road draw with Waterford (4-4-2, 1-1-1).

Boys Water Polo

Merced 11, Atwater 9 in Atwater – Abraham Santana’s five goals, three assists and four steals helped the Bears (11-1, 2-0 CCC) get off to a fast start and hold off Atwater.

Connor Norton had three goals, three assists and three steals to pace the Falcons (4-4, 1-1).

Turlock 13, Buhach Colony 11 in Turlock – Tristan Howard and Luke Bird each had four goals for the Thunder (4-5, 1-1 CCC), but it couldn’t keep pace with Turlock (4-5, 1-1).

Girls Water Polo

Turlock 7, Buhach Colony 3 in Turlock – Gwynne McBride’s two goals and four steals paced the Thunder (0-2 CCC) in a loss to the Bulldogs.

Volleyball

El Capitan 3, Ceres 0 in Ceres – The Gauchos (9-0, 4-0 Western Athletic Conference) spread the offense around as Malia Danby (10 kills), Oriana Danby (8), Ariana Johnson (8) and Makenzie Webber (8) all turned in big nights in a 25-11, 25-23, 25-15 sweep of Ceres.
