Surdich on Bowling: Broussard rolls first 300 – ‘finally’

Gene Broussard, competing with his team, Toyotech, finally rolled his first sanctioned 300 game in the Commercial Classic league last Wednesday night on lanes 3 and 4.

I walked over to congratulate Broussard, who opened his arms and said, “Finally.”

In the last two years, Broussard rolled a 298 on lanes 3 and 4 and a 299 on lanes 1 and 2 in the same league. I think he likes that end of the house, as he has owned it. Broussard finished with a super 775 set; his previous best was a 769. He has a 220 average now.

He just purchased a new ball and had it drilled by Sean McCulloch of Bellevue Bowl’s pro shop. It’s the newest ball from Storm, the “Crux,” a 15-pound hybrid reactive cover stock with a catalyst core. It’s working for Broussard.

BVL results

A total of 49 men, women and kids bowled in the Merced County USBC Association’s annual Bowlers to Veterans Link on Sunday at Bellevue to support veterans clinics and hospitals in California.

For the men, Sean McCulloch took the Classic division with a 730, the A had Bob Weimer with a 640, the B had Fred Ruell with a 527, and the C had Los Banos resident Dominic Pugliese with a 483. On the women’s side, it was Rae Coonce in the Classic with a 588, Dawn Fernandez in the A division with a 605, Lauren Moosbauer in B with a 516, Barbara Huddleston in C with a 459, Amanda Ulmer in D with a 480 and another winner from Los Banos, Maria Pugliese, in E with a 415. In the boys division was Elijah Torres rolling a great 585. All were scratch scores.

Winner of the patriotic bowling ball was Ulmer. High games were rolled by Jim Mullings (279), Casey McFarlin (277), Neill Barcellos (267), Peggy Docherty (233), Moosbauer (233), Elva Maltman (224) and Torres (212).

All winners receive a BVL certificate for supporting veterans and will compete in the Helen Duval Veterans tournament for the California State Finals on March 21 at McHenry Bowl in Modesto. This year’s total for the BVL has reached $1,661 with donations from every league at Bellevue, the tournament and the ball raffle.

Allison conclusion

I received word from Terry Bigham of USBC communications that on Friday, the appeal for Glenn Allison’s 900 series, rolled July 1, 1982, was declined by the USBC Board of Directors. More on this in my next column.

Senior New Year party

It’s time to make plans to ring in the new year at McHenry Bowl. It’s a bowler’s party to end all parties with a no-tap senior tournament on Dec. 31. Everything gets rolling with a catered light buffet lunch at 11:30 a.m., followed by bowling at 12:30 p.m.

The cost is $30 plus an optional side high game pot of $3. The price includes the buffet, party favors, prizes, champagne or sparkling cider and colored pin money shots. Guests who are not bowling can pay $15 for the buffet and goodies. You can ring in the new year at 3 p.m. with friends and your own engraved champagne glass, which is yours to keep. Contact me at desurdich@aol.com or (209) 777-1111, and I will drop off a flier during your league play.
