Buhach Colony girls nearly make section Masters in golf
No girls golf team in the still-young history of Buhach Colony High School has made a deeper push into the postseason than the 2015 Thunder.
Buhach Colony joined seven other teams, along with 21 individual qualifiers, at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South Tournament on Monday at Creekside. Buhach totaled 463 strokes and placed fourth, three strokes shy of a playoff for next week’s section Masters in Stockton.
Still, just being at Creekside was a big deal for Buhach, the Central California Conference co-champion with Turlock.
Coach Steve Abrams noted the Thunder has produced better players over the years but never a better team. The Thunder went 10-0 during the dual-meet season, and only two second-place finishes to Turlock in the CCC midseason and end-of-season tournaments cost it an outright title.
In fact, it took a tiebreaker for Turlock to emerge victorious at the CCC. The Bulldogs ran their CCC title streak to 12.
“It’s funny how this game works. We were one stroke away (from an outright title),” Abrams said. “It was an accomplishment this year for the girls. We competed with Turlock. It’s been a fun season, and we’ll miss our seniors tremendously.”
Buhach senior Sabrina Thao absorbed a bittersweet finish Monday. She shot an 87 and would have joined five other individual qualifiers for the Masters had Enochs beaten Turlock in a playoff for the third and final team berth.
Instead, the Bulldogs advanced and Thao’s season ended.
Other Buhach Colony scores were senior Tianna Lee with an 89, freshman Maddie Freitas with a 92, sophomore Selena Thao a 94, senior Maddi Murphy a 101 and freshman Caitlin Garcia a 133.
