Surdich on Bowling: Merced/Atwater 500 Club members cash in Hanford tournament

Two local club members placed and won a few bucks in the recent Hanford Women’s 500 Club tournament. Julie Egleston, club secretary for the Merced/Atwater Women’s 500 Club, rolled a 660 to take first place in the A division for $90. Placing fifth in the B division with a 611 was club vice president Phyllis Wallbaum for $48.

The Modesto 500 Club Invitational at Yosemite Lanes had local club member Debra Taliaferro with a 598 to win the A division and $82. In the B division, Wallbaum took third with a 618 for $90, and Sharon Ball rolled a 595 for sixth and $65. More than 90 women bowled in the Modesto event.

League highlights – Jerry Hill celebrated Veterans Day in style, wearing a camo shirt and cap for the Wednesday night Commercial Classic league. Hill had more to celebrate as he rolled his first 300 game and finished with a 702 series. On the approach before his 12th ball, he backed off, took a couple of breaths and fired a strike in the pocket.

Lisa Mayo in the same league picked up the 5-6 split. Gary Wescott in the Monday Merchants almost had a triplicate, as he started with a 167, then shot back-to-back 222s for a 611.

Turkey Shoot – This Friday, Nov. 20, at McHenry Bowl in Modesto, you can roll for a turkey in the annual 9-pin no-tap Turkey Shoot. Last year, McHenry awarded a turkey for strikes in the third, sixth and ninth frames. That contest will be held again Friday, and the frames will be chosen then. Remember, there are a limited amount of birds to give away.

The afternoon starts with a potluck at noon, followed by sign-ups at 12:30 p.m. and first ball at 1 p.m. It’s a fun day. Besides trying to win a bird, you can also place in the high-game pot and series to win a few bucks. Entry fee is only $15. See you Friday.

Cal-State Seniors – Local bowlers are on the leaderboard in the 46th annual Cal-State Senior tournament in Fresno and Clovis. In B doubles (120-139 years) handicapped, the Hunters are in a tie for 10th place with a 1,419 total. The tournament ends this weekend.
