Surdich on Bowling: Winner winner, turkey dinner at McHenry Bowl in Modesto

McHenry Bowl had a full house of seniors last Friday for the annual senior 9-pin no-tap Turkey Shoot.

Terry Waring and Theresa Medeiros of the staff gave away 35 birds this year. In the first game, bowlers had to strike in frames two, five and eight to win a turkey.

Kim Heller of Gustine received the first turkey among seven association bowlers who were rolling. Manuel Frade of Winton took home a bird in the second game by striking in the first, fourth and eighth frames.

The first high-game pot had Carol Almeida, Heller and Janie Schropp winning some bucks. Schropp also placed in the second high game, and T.J. Jensen earned cash in the third game. The high overall series for women had Schropp again placing with an 805 for more cash.

Yosemite senior no-tap – Yosemite Lanes in Modesto will hold its monthly senior 9-pin no-tap Nov. 27 at 1 p.m. with sign-ups at noon. There are separate divisions for men and women in the high game and series pots. The cost is $13. Remember, there is no potluck.

Holiday Scotch Doubles – The Merced/Atwater Women’s 500 Club is hosting its yearly Holiday Scotch Doubles on Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. at Bellevue Bowl. According to tournament director Julie Wescott, the event is open to all USBC members, and teams can be any combination. Maximum team average is 420.

You will roll four games of 9-pin no-tap on one pair of lanes. Your lowest game will be thrown out. One bowler rolls the first ball, and the other bowler the second (trying to pick up the spare). If the first bowler rolls a strike, positions switch. It has always been fun.

Entry fee is $22 per person. You’ll use your highest 2014-15 winter book average. Entry forms are available at Bellevue.

Bowlers to Veterans Link results – A total of 45 men and women rolled in our association’s annual BVL tournament Sunday at Bellevue.

Black Friday special – The pro shop at McHenry Bowl is having a Black Friday sale on Nov. 27. If you’re looking for a new ball, they have the High Performance Paradox X-Out from Track. If you need a bag, they have single, double and triple rollers. Call 209-571-2700.

The 10th frame – We lost another bowler last Saturday, as Bob Nush, 79, passed away after a long, tough illness. Nush was known around Bellevue Bowl as a lane and machine mechanic. He met his wife, Nevora, while bowling in the Tuesday night league at Century Bowl. There were married for 20 years.

A sports buff, his favorite teams were the Yankees since 1946, the Cowboys since 1960 and the Lakers since 1948. Bob will be missed by all.

As he requested, there will be no service and a private burial will be held at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella. Bob was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
