Surdich on Bowling: Senior singles tourney on tap at Bellevue Bowl

Our Merced County USBC Association is hosting its annual senior singles tournament Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. at Bellevue Bowl.

There are two divisions: A division for 50-64 years old and B division for 65 and above. Men and women bowl together. You will use your 2014-15 book average. The tourney will be regular bowling. Entry fee is $25 per person. Last year’s champions were Bill Botwright Jr. in A division and Bruce Wescott in B division.

New Year in Paris – Just a reminder to all bowlers who have signed up to roll at McHenry Bowl’s New Year in Paris party. The buffet starts at 11:30 a.m., and the first ball rolls at 12:30 p.m. One of our bowlers, John Krone, told me if anyone needs a ride to McHenry in Modesto to contact him.

Bring in the New Year at Bellevue – Family Moonlight Bowling for kids and adults runs Thursday from 6:30-9:30 p.m. An adults-only party runs from 10 p.m.-1 a.m. The cost for the early party is $12 for kids ages 4-12 and $15 for adults. Kids 3 and under are free. Your price includes shoe rental, hats and noisemakers, two pieces of pizza, a soft drink and door prizes.

The later party has a breakfast buffet which includes biscuits and gravy, sausage and hash browns and will be served after midnight. The bowl will have a champagne toast at midnight. The cost is $25 per person. Call 209-358-6466 to reserve a spot to bring in 2016 in style with friends and family.

Modesto’s TofC is Sunday – Yosemite Lanes in Modesto is the site for the Scratch 6-Gamer Tournament of Champions on Sunday, starting at noon.

Included in the field of 24 is Rick Francis, a top Modesto-area bowler who suffered a broken leg a year ago when he was hit by a car after stopping to help a stranded motorist. Throughout his rehab, Francis bowled from a wheelchair and then on crutches before getting fully back on his feet. Last month, Francis won the November 6-Gamer at Yosemite, bowling a 300 game in the final, to qualify for the TofC.

League highlights – The Monday Merchants had Marcus Kendrick stringing strikes for a great 297 game. Gene Broussard, Mayo Goldman and Dave Porter had it going in the Commercial Classic on Wednesday with Broussard rolling a 256, Goldman a 267 and Porter a 268.

▪ I want to wish all the readers of my column, bowlers and friends a very Happy New Year.
