Surdich on Bowling: Central Valley Senior Club ready to roll at McHenry

The field of bowling centers is now set as the Central Valley Senior Bowling Club will kick off its first tournament in Modesto.

The inaugural handicap singles tournament will be held Feb. 20 at McHenry Bowl with a 1 p.m. start. You can join the club before the first tourney; membership is $20 per year. Tournament entry fee is $40, and one out of four will cash.

The roll-off pits the top three scorers for singles and doubles. Guest bowlers are welcome for a $10 non-refundable fee in addition to the entry fee.

Applications and tournament schedules are available at Bellevue Bowl. The club is open to men 55 and older and women 50 and older.

Following the McHenry opening, the club moves across town to Yosemite Lanes on March 19 for a singles event, followed by West Valley Bowl in Tracy hosting a singles event April 16. All tournaments will begin at 1 p.m. Bellevue Bowl will host a singles event June 18.

League highlights – The Monday Night Merchants saw Rico “Suave” Monton, who has a 122 average, roll a 192 game. ... The Classic had Andre Brice shooting a 234 game. ... Friday Merchants saw Darren Alexander rolling sixes all night with a 166-186-266 with a 177 average. ... The Central Valley Nisei league had Mike Giordano with a 763 set and Dave Egleston with a 675.

Lefty takes scratch 6-gamer – Southpaw Myles Duty of Modesto captured the January Scratch 6-gamer at Yosemite Lanes by defeating Kevin Harlin of Milpitas in the championship match 256-243. It was a close match until Harlin rolled a 6-7-10 split. Duty won $369 and a berth in the Tournament of Champions in December. Harlin earned $250. Both earned bonus points for their placements in the tournament. A total of 31 bowlers from the Valley and Bay Area participated. The next 6-gamer is Feb. 28 at Yosemite. Also on the schedule is the Modesto Masters on April 2-3.

New sponsor – The United States Bowling Congress is now a major sponsor of the Professional Bowlers Association.

Belmonte wins again – Winning two PBA Tour majors in 2015 made Jason Belmonte, the two-handed pro, a shoo-in to become the fourth bowler to win the Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year honor three consecutive years. Earl Anthony, Mark Roth and Walter Ray Williams Jr. are the other three. Also in 2015, Belmonte won the USBC Masters for the third year in a row – the first to do so.
