Surdich on Bowling: Fernandez duo wins Bellevue’s City Championships

Dawn Fernandez set the pace for her doubles win with husband Joey Fernandez in the 70th annual City Championships last weekend at Bellevue Bowl, as she rolled a 277 game with a 696 series. They combined for a 1,512 total with handicap.

Placing second was the team of Robert Chaney and Tim Grimes, just missing first place by three pins with a 1,509. Right behind were Gene Broussard and Cam Clemens with a 1,507.

Joey Fernandez kept up the pace in singles, rolling a handicap series of 800 to take first place over Dennis Gray (796) by four pins. In third place was Gray’s league and doubles teammate, Adam Andrino, with a 734.

Gray won scratch all-events with a score of 2,026. Larry Valenti Jr. was the runner-up with a 1,994, and Sean McCulloch was third with a 1,978.

The handicap all-events had Joseph McBride rolling a 2,414. Ryan Sziraki was second with a 2,220, and Joey Fernandez was third with a 2,181.

City team winners – The Castle Knights rolled a 3,018 with handicap to win the Open team event in the City Championships. California Recycle followed with a 2,826 for second, and 3 Raiders & a 49er took third with a 2,788. The Knights had Jay Carincross, Sziraki, Tom McBride and Joseph McBride on the team.

The women’s side of the team event had Bowlin Kinda Girls in first place with a score of 2,717 with handicap. In second place was the Four Queens, and Bellevue Bowl finished third. Winning team members were Julie Wescott, Julie Egleston, Kim Deathriadge and LaDonna Stone.

The women’s singles had Kim Barcellos winning with a 753, Peggy Docherty in second with a 724 and Margaret Herzog in third with a 712. Egleston and Stone won women’s doubles with a 1,512, Herzog and Phyllis Wallbaum were second with a 1,397, and Nevora Nush and Docherty were third with a 1,370.

Handicap all-events for the women had Stone in first with a 2,127, Barcellos in second with a 2,116 and Docherty in third with a 2,101.

League highlights – Bill Dills in the Bellevue Seniors converted the 3-6-10 and 4-7 splits on the same ball. ... The Friday Handicap had Gene Frazier rolling a 270 game and Marty Daniel a 679 series. ... Sean McCulloch had a 761 set and Casey McFarlin a 276 game in the Classic.

Black Oak Championships – Judy Simpson was on a roll last Friday at Black Oak Lanes. Bowling with a group of 10 locals in the 11th annual Black Oak Lanes Senior 9-pin No-tap Championships, Simpson placed in all the women’s high-game pots: first game (316 with handicap), second (291) and third (329). She had a pocket full of money for $33. Tournament director Jeff Hurley said Simpson has a real shot to place high in the overall women’s results, which will be out in a few weeks. Her three-game handicap total was 936.

Remember when – From the Merced/Atwater Bowling News: On June 27, 1988, Mary Vergano, president of the Merced/Atwater Women’s Bowling Association, received a confirmation from Castle Lanes to host its annual City Tournament. The manager of Castle Lanes, Charley Rice, said 16 lanes would be available for two or three weekends, as would a full-service snack bar with food, beer and wine coolers. The game price would be 90 cents. ... Scores from the All-Star Scratch league at Century Bowl had Tony Repanich with 204, George Hise with a 209 and Vance Carter with a 212. All bowled for N&S Tractor. ... Branding Iron’s Jack Railly had a 210, Chuck Hise of Cal’s Texaco had a 226-642, and Elmer Paravana had a 227 and Jim Ketner a 224. Both bowled for Nick’s Drive-In.
