Surdich on Bowling: Senior Club continues with doubles in Brentwood

Up next for the Central Valley Senior Bowling Club will be its first doubles event at 1 p.m. May 21 at Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood.

Entry fee is $40 per bowler for four games of qualifying. The top three will roll off in a mini stepladder with the No. 3 seed rolling against the No. 2 seed and the winner bowling the top seed for the title. You can join the club on the day of the tournament.

Coming on June 18 will be the club’s stop in Atwater at Bellevue Bowl for a singles event. Men 55 and older and women 50 and older can join the club.

At last month’s event in Tracy, the club had seven women in the prize fund – a couple were in the top three. I know Atwater has the women to compete, and all tournaments are handicap.

League champions – Wednesday’s Commercial Classic, the top league at Bellevue Bowl, had the Atwater Medical Group taking the crown from three other teams. The Group started the first game on fire and stayed hot. Mike Robins shot a scratch 695. Team members and their averages are Robins (193), Kevin Decker (181), Arnie Ohki (169), Andre Brice (161) and Justin Decker (224).

Placing second was Bellevue Bowl, followed by Pazin & Myers, Inc., and the Brooklyn Brawlers.

This league does not give out individual awards. It receives $2,000 from Bellevue Bowl. That money goes for a better “point money” return and the championship round.

Yosemite senior no-tap – Kim Heller and Bill Simpson found Yosemite Lanes in Modesto to their liking Friday during a 9-pin no-tap tourney. Heller took first place in the first women’s scratch high game and tied for third in the third game. She totaled a 906 for first place in the women’s high series, good for $50. Overall, she won $61.50.

Simpson finished third overall in the men’s scratch series with an 887 for $35.

Up next are Black Oak Lanes in Tuolumne and McHenry Bowl in Modesto on May 6. Both are regular 9-pin no-tap events.

League secretary – I received a note from the USBC rules department informing me that, according to USBC Rule 103f, duties of the secretary/treasurer in each league require giving each team captain a detailed financial statement at the end of your league season.

The statement shows all income received on behalf of the league and an accounting of all money disbursed. The financial statement must also show the prize fund and how much was distributed and list to whom funds were awarded.

Request the statement from your secretary if you don’t receive one.

Modesto 6-gamer – Wayne Garber said scores from Yosemite Lanes’ monthly scratch 6-gamers were down from recent tournaments as Noel Vasquez of Sacramento led the bowlers with a 217 average (a 1,305 total qualifying round). Vasquez then defeated last month’s champion, Nick Kelly of Modesto, to win the April 6-gamer and first-place money of $365. Kelly received $270.

Vasquez qualified for the Tournament of Champions at the end of the year.

The 10th frame – Mary Jane McMurry, 95, died recently at a senior facility in Merced. McMurry was a lifetime member of the Merced/Atwater Women’s Bowling Association, and she was the first vice president in 1980-81. She was the sergeant at arms of the Merced/Atwater Women’s 500 Club in 1977-78.

Mary Jane was inducted into the Merced County Bowling Hall of Fame in 1998 alongside Eke Eichorst and Mary Cardoza.

I never met Mary Jane, but I always heard her name around our bowling centers. Always a bowler, McMurry requested contributions be made to the Hall of Fame Scholarship Fund in her name. Mail to: Merced County USBC, 1012 Deerfield Court, Merced, CA, 95340.
