Surdich on bowling: Inaugural veterans tournament May 21 at Bellevue

The first Bellevue Bowl’s Veterans Bowling Tournament is May 21, and the handicap event includes two divisions.

Division 1 is for active or retired veterans of any branch of the service; there also is an open division. The tournament is open to men and women with a USBC card. You will use your highest average of 2015-16; if you don’t have one, you can use your 2014-15 book. Your handicap will be based on 90 percent of 220, and you will roll three games.

It is not a sanctioned tournament. Entry fee is $20, and one of five will cash. A $100 donation has been added to the prize fund courtesy of Chuck Shafer, a former Air Force master sergeant and one-time desk person at Bellevue Bowl during his stay at Castle Air Force Base. He retired in 1980. Entry forms are available at Atwater center.

Board adds a new member – At the annual association meeting Saturday, members voted to retain the following directors for a two-year term: Carol Brewer, Kevin Heil, Gudi Ross and Karen Hunter.

Tyler Davis was appointed as the newest director of the association by our re-elected president, Tom Brewer, to take the seat of Richard Tweed for a one-year team.

The main topic was an email from vice president Dave Egleston, who attended the USBC convention in Las Vegas. Apparently, the USBC will be raising dues in the 2017-18 season.

The recent Hall of Fame dinner was on the agenda, and a financial statement was given to all members present by Sharon Roper, scholarship chairman. A discussion was held about the P.A. system again; the Hall’s system hasn’t worked properly for three years.

Again, there was sparse attendance of association members at the meeting. If you want to have a say on tournaments, the Hall of Fame or anything else, you have to attend.

League champions – The Central Valley Nisei league held its roll-off last Thursday night at Bellevue with E.R. Vine & Sons taking the championship by edging Yagi Bros. Team members and their averages: Harold Vartikian (158), Rikki Cascia (158) and Monty Stone (175).

Taking individual awards in the high scratch games were Jim Mullings (279) and Peggy Docherty (248), and high scratch series had Mike Giordano (703) and LaDonna Stone (676).

Plenty of openings – Summer leagues are up and running, and there are openings in all leagues at the Atwater center, including several for men and women in the Jubilee leagues on Tuesday and Thursday nights. The Tuesday afternoon seniors need a few bowlers to fill spots. Check with the desk at 209-358-6466 for more information.
