Surdich on Bowling: All-Modesto final decides Brentwood senior doubles
Vickie Briscoe, secretary for the Central Valley Senior Bowling Club, informed me of the final results of the doubles tournament they held at Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood.
The winning team normally rolls during McHenry Bowl’s senior no-taps; I guess they wanted to try their luck in the senior doubles tournament. Loren and Janet Spooner of Modesto qualified second with an 1,809 and had a one-game roll-off against Ginger DeMello and Art Rosenburg, also of Modesto, the first-place qualifiers with an 1,810. The Spooners prevailed 457-422 for first-place money of $340. DeMello and Rosenburg earned $240. The club paid out $1,584 for nine places.
The club’s next stop will be a singles event at Bellevue Bowl on June 18 with a 1 p.m. start. Entry fee is $40 for this handicap tournament for men over 55 and women over 50.
500 club tournament – The Merced/Atwater Women’s 500 Club will host its yearly Three on a Team handicap tournament June 12 at 1 p.m. at Bellevue. The tourney is limited to the first 33 paid entries. Teams can be three women, three men or mixed. Entry fee is $22 per person, and you bowl three regular games.
You’ll use your 2015 book average. The handicap is 80 percent of 220 for each bowler. Entries close at 6 p.m. June 10.
Summertime is tournament time, and this is one of many coming up.
Yosemite senior no-tap – There was a large group of seniors rolling at Yosemite Lanes last Friday in their monthly senior 9-pin no-tap mini tourney. A few Bellevue bowlers came home with a few bucks.
Coming in the sixth spot in the women’s total series was Hilmar’s Judy Simpson with an 810. In the third high game of the side pot, yours truly finished in second with a 316 and Keith Hunter in fourth with a 305. Hunter also placed third in the high series with an 867. Everyone came home with bucks in their pockets.
Up next on June 17 is a senior no-tap doubles at McHenry Bowl, and following will be Yosemite Lanes’ 9-pin no-tap June 24.
Champions Honor Roll – The Friday Night Handicap held its four team roll-off Friday, and The Bowling Stones captured the championship by getting by CMS Delivery. The Stones’ team members with their averages: David Walker (163), Andre Brice (170), Kristopher Walker (183) and Stephanie Kapsimallis (188). CMS Delivery had Kenny Schmitz (189), Tyrell Alley (173), Cam Clemens (204) and Larry Valenti Jr. (217).
Individual awards for high games and series went to Mike Coe (300), Stephanie Thompson (257), Justin Decker (754) and Ashley Dehart (732). Brice had a great season by bowling on two championships: Atwater Medical Group (Commercial Classic) and The Bowling Stones.
Vanessa Brown regional – The 11th annual Vanessa Brown Homes PBA Western Regional and the popular pro-am will be at Yosemite Lanes on June 10 and 11.
Three divisions are being offered. All pro-am divisions are 9-pin no-tap. Your senior division entry fee is $25, adult entry $40 and junior division $20. On June 10, you roll at 4 p.m., and on June 11 at 7:30 p.m. Your highest 2016 book average will be used. Entries are available at Bellevue.
Yosemite Lanes is offering a special package that runs from $110 to $190 for the new Hammer Scandal or Ebonite Cyclone with weights from 12 to 16 pounds, which includes drilling and your entry fee.
PBA pros who are scheduled to compete include Michael Haugen Jr., Chris Warren, lefty Scott Norton and Josh Blanchard of Mesa, Ariz. Blanchard was the 2015 PBA winner of the Steve Nagy Sportsmanship Award.
There will be several West Coast regional players attending. Last year, USBC Hall of Fame member Brian Voss showed up and rolled. Who knows who might be in Modesto?
Note – Yosemite Lanes will have its monthly scratch 6-gamer June 5 with sign-ups at 11 a.m. and action starting at noon. There will be an optional Win-A-Spot for the 11th annual PBA West Region of the Vanessa Brown Homes Open. Optional high game, last game, brackets and senior insurance will be available.
