Surdich on Bowling: Central Valley Seniors at Bellevue this Saturday

The Central Valley Senior Bowling Club will roll into Bellevue Bowl this Saturday, June 18, with first ball rolling at 1 p.m.

It’s a handicap singles event for men 55 and older and women 50 and older. You can join the club for $20 per year. Entry fee for the tourney is $40, and you roll four games of qualifying across eight lanes. The top three qualifiers then battle it out in a mini-stepladder. The third seed plays the second seed with the winner bowling the No. 1 qualifier to determine the champion.

You can bowl as a guest for a $10 fee in addition to your entry fee. Your highest book average as of April 1, 2015 will be used. Bowlers winning checks will receive them the day of the tournament. The singles champion also will receive a plaque.

PBA Vanessa Brown a hit – A total of 59 bowlers, with a mixture of PBA and regional players, were on the lanes last weekend for the PBA West Region’s 11th annual Vanessa Brown Homes Open in Modesto.

Taking first place was Abraham Lopez of Chula Vista, totaling 3,073 pins to edge Gregory Thompson Jr. of Dublin with 3,068. Lopez won $2,000, and Thompson earned $1,000. Modesto’s Will Garber finished third for $800, and longtime PBA member Mike Scroggins, a left-hander from Texas, finished seventh for $700.

We had our own player in Neill Barcellos rolling again in the regional and placing 37th with a 209 average for eight games. This young man keeps trying to make a few bucks and has started to give bowling a real shot. I believe Barcellos will continue to bowl the regionals and other scratch tournaments in order to qualify as a regional player.

Several bowlers were headed to Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood for the PBA50 Northern California Classic, where first place is worth $8,000. Jim Gordin and Jim Taliaferro from Yosemite Lanes rolled.

Senior Friday – This Friday is McHenry Bowl’s senior no-tap doubles event with a 1 p.m. start. They hold a potluck at noon with sign-ups at 12:30 p.m. Entry fee is $15, which includes your high-game pot. Get your partner ready to bowl, and don’t forget we’ll be at Yosemite Lanes on June 24 for a 9-pin no-tap.

Remember when – From the Final Frame in in the Sun-Star’s sports section in 1952: Twenty-five members of the Merced Ladies Bowling Association participated in a city tournament here last weekend under the supervision of the local Women’s International Bowling Congress officers. The team event, which was rolled on Friday, was won by the Carter Food Locker team. The members of this team are Charleyne Sabo, Catherine Machado, Rose Lewis, Mary Lee Scott and Nina Kimzey. Second place was taken by the Bear Creek Co., team comprised of Louise Wallace, Ceci Johnson, Jane Parrott, Carole Aschbacher and Rose Hirsch.

500 Club results – I will have complete results – winners, score and money won for each team – from the Merced/Atwater Women’s 500 Club Three on a Team tournament held last Saturday at Bellevue Bowl in next week’s column.
