Surdich on bowling: Central Valley seniors to host monthly event

The Central Valley Senior Bowling Club will host its monthly championship singles tournament this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Manteca Bowl. Sign-up starts at noon with a $40 entry fee, with first ball rolling at 1 p.m.

People can join the club when they sign up to bowl on Saturday. Participants will bowl four games of qualifying then a mini stepladder to reach the championship match. The top three qualifiers roll the mini stepladder finals. The club is open for membership for men over 55 and women over 50. We have had several association members cash in a few tournaments. To get a spot, contact Dave Brown at 209 549-2510, or just sign up in Manteca. The champion receives a plaque courtesy of Delta-Sierra Beverage of Modesto.

The Peach is still rolling. ... The 67th Annual Peach Classic handicap singles tournament is still rolling until Sunday, July 31. Top prize is $2,500 guaranteed, second place is $1,500 and third place is $1,000. The Peach will pay down to 100 place a $100. They have special prize categories running in conjunction with the Peach that are included in your entry fee at no extra charge. The pay for high individual scratch game for men and women, five game scratch for men and women, and 10 game handicap. Entry fee is $60 includes the special prize categories. A bowlers will be rolling five games across six lanes (2-1-2). Your 2015-2016 book average will be used. The lanes are cleaned and oiled prior to every squad. The Peach is USBC certified. Senior no-tap update. ... A correction for McHenry Bowl’s no-tap. They will have their bi-monthly senior no-tap Friday, July 15, starting at 1 p.m. Prior to bowling they host a pot-luck lunch at noon. registration starts at 12:30 p.m. Entry fee is $15, which includes your high game pot for both men and women. The week of July 22 is the senior no-tap 9-pin at Yosemite Lanes starting at 1 p.m. Entry fee is $13. Your high game is paid out after every game for men and women. The past few weeks there has been a few locals cashing in Modesto.

PBA Wine Country results. ... It looks like Jakob Butturff from Chandler, Ariz., liked the lanes at Doubles Decker at Rohnert Park last weekend. He walked away from the PBA West/Northwest Open sponsored by Roto Grip with a check for $2,000. Coming in second was Gregory Thompson Jr. from Dublin. for $1,200. Locals did not fare too well, as Will Garber placed 24th and Rick Francis 45th. According to Gary Mage, PBA director for the West and Northwest region, there were 62 bowlers rolling with a mix of PBA members and regional players.

Remember when. ... The following is a report from the Modesto Bowl on 13th street in Modesto in 1967 covering the 18th annual Peach Handicap Singles Classic. The following are from the report. A total of 3,620 entries at $11.00 for $39,830.99 in entry fees. The prize fund was $23,530.00 In the 7th year in a row, the tournament gave 100th place $100 in prize money according to Jerry Marsh and Art Renner. A few Atwater, Merced, and Castle AFB bowlers place in the prize fund, they were: High 5 games scratch women, Betty Brown of Merced a 989 ($75.00) high scratch game women, Brown 221 ($6.25). The men’s high scratch game had Walter Smith of Castle AFB a 268 ($67.50), Kent Sawin of Merced a 255 ($20.00), Fred Nunes of Merced a 245 ($10.00). The handicap singles classic final standing had Harrison Shaw of Oakdale in first with a 1,147 for ($700.00), Sawin in ninth a 1,113 for ($187.50), Mervyn Nelson of Castle AFB with 1,060 ($100.00), Dennis Friebel of Atwater with 1,054 ($100.00), Adolfas Bulevicius of Atwater with 1,051 for ($80.00), Brown with 1,034 for ($20.00), Nunes with 1,030 ($20.00), Chuck Oliver of Merced a 1,025 ($15.00), Norman L. Brown of Merced a 1,019 ($11.00), and Gabriel Aguliera of Merced with a 1,012 ($11.00). Note: I found this report in old papers that I was going though.
