Surdich on Bowling: Huddleston scores big at USBC Open
It looks like Ed Huddleston was hot in Reno, not at the tables but on the lanes. He will be receiving some greenbacks soon from the 2016 USBC Open Championships at the National Bowling Stadium.
In the Classified all-events, Huddleston finished 20th with a score of 1,678, with individual series of 459, 560 and 659 for $300. In singles, he rolled games of 275, 213 and 170 for a 658 series for $1,200 and a second-place finish, missing first place by three pins. Great bowling, Ed.
Yosemite Lanes senior no-tap – The Bellevue gang was in the groove Friday, as the following bowlers made a few bucks: Topping the list was T.J. Jensen, as she scored in the women’s high-game pot and women’s high series. Also placing were Karen Hunter, Charlie McMillian and Janie Schropp.
Men placing in the high-game pot were Bob Heller and yours truly. Heller also placed third in the men’s high series.
This Friday, McHenry Bowl is having its senior no-tap at 1 p.m. It starts with a potluck and sign-ups at 12:30 p.m. Don’t know for sure about the setup; could be 8-pin or 9-pin no-tap. It depends on the mood Terry and Theresa are in.
Belmonte wins best bowler award – According to Jerry Schneider of PBA media relations, Jason Belmonte won ESPY best bowler award for the second year in a row. Belmonte edged left-hander Ryan Ciminelli and two-handed bowlers Jesper Svensson and Anthony Simonsen.
In 2015, Belmonte became the first international player to win three consecutive Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year awards. Walter Ray Williams Jr. is the all-time leader with seven ESPY best bowler awards.
NorCal tourney – The Northern California Bowling Centers will host the Circus Circus Doubles Down Tournament at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1-2. The advanced entry fee is $50; the on-site fee is $60.
The tournament is open to all bowlers, and teams will consist of two bowlers (men-women-mixed). Your team will bowl three games on one pair of lanes. You will use your highest average of the last two years (2014-15 or 2015-16). The handicap for all teams will be 80 percent of 440. Contact the NorCal Bowling Centers at 925-485-1855 or email cindys@norcalbowling.com.
Senior instructions – Seniors, with the leagues starting soon, here is a chance to get ready. My friend Steve Plant of Modesto hosts a 50-and-over senior bowling class every Thursday afternoon at McHenry. It starts at 12:30 p.m. with no sign-up or commitment. The cost is only $5 for two games of bowling, instructions, shoe rental if needed, coffee, tea or soft drinks, with a hot dog and chips. You get to meet new seniors, have fun and learn tips from a USBC-certified coach.
The Peach’s last weekend – The 67th annual Peach Classic handicap singles tournament will close Sunday. Top prize is $2,500, $1,500 for second and $1,000 for third place. The Peach will pay $100 to the top 100 places in singles.
Entry fee is $60, and it includes the special prize categories. You will roll five games across six lanes (2-1-2). Your 2015-16 book average will be used. Call McHenry for this weekend’s times to roll at 209-571-2695.
No Manteca CVSBC results – I did not receive results from the recent Central Valley Senior Bowling Club singles event at Manteca Bowl. Maybe next time. Up next for the club it will be in the hills at Black Oak Casino and Lanes on Aug. 20.
