Surdich on Bowling: Fall meetings and league startups

The fall season is upon us, and here is the schedule of meetings and starting dates for each league. Bellevue’s season starts Sept. 6 with the Bellevue Seniors at 1 p.m. and the Guys and Dolls at 7 p.m. at Bellevue Bowl. On Aug. 30, the Bellevue Seniors will hold a preseason meeting at 1 p.m. followed by the Guys and Dolls at 7 p.m. The Commercial Classic will meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 31 before starting play Sept. 7. The Twilighters Seniors’ meeting is set for 1 p.m. Sept. 1, and they begin play at 1 p.m. Sept. 8. The Friday Handicap meeting is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 2 with action starting at 7 p.m. Sept. 9.

Finally, the Monday Merchants meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 29 and get rolling at 7 p.m. Sept. 12.

For more information, contact Patty Harrell or Tommy Cardoza at the Bellevue control desk at (209) 358-6466.

Simpson scores at Black Oak – Judy Simpson must really like the lanes at Black Oak in Tuolumne City. Black Oak had two squads of nine-pin no-tap Friday, rolling at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., with a total of 120 men and women. Participating in the 1:30 squad, Simpson placed second in the first women’s high game pot with a 311 game for $20. She took first overall among the women with an 894 series and received $62.

Janie Schropp finished 10th in the overall with a 793 and collected $18. Modesto’s Bettery Gerritsen took first in the high game pot in the third game with a 318 and got $20. In the overall women’s series, she placed third with a 853 for $50.

The next no-tap mini tournament will be Sept. 2 with two squads. Black Oak is accepting pre-paid entries, and for more information, call tournament director Jeff Hurley at (209) 928-9437.

On Friday, McHenry Bowl will hold its monthly senior no-tap at 1 p.m. with a potluck lunch at noon. Signups start at 12:30 p.m. Entry fee is $15, and men and women have separate divisions.

Slizzlin’ Summer Days are gone – I was surprised that Bellevue Bowl discontinued its popular Sizzlin’ Summer Days League. Bowlers could practice for only $1.50 a game during the week and had many other perks from the snack bar.

Aqua Entertainment Center – A Los Banos bowler checked out the new alley in town and reported the lanes were dry as a desert and the ball hooked 40 boards, if that is possible. He swung the ball from the 30 board and took out only the 7-pin. He talked to the manager, who said AMF told him to oil the lanes every four days. I guess it might take awhile to get the kinks out.

Remember when – The Merced Bowling Association officers in 1968-69 were president Jack Rahilly, board members Forist Harris, Tom Hallahan, Lumie Vyborny, Warren Weston and Don Surdich and secretary/treasurer John O’Neill. The City Association Champions in 1975 were Bellevue Bowl Flyers (team), Bernie Herrman and Fred Musilli (doubles), Chris Cron (singles and all-events). Darcy Foster had the season-high game (300), and Ken Romer (855) and Doug Laidlaw (815) had the season-high series.
