Surdich on Bowling: Senior Club at Black Oak on Saturday

The Central Valley Senior Bowling Club will be at Black Oak Lanes in Tuolumne hosting its monthly handicap singles tournament Saturday at 1 p.m.

Men over 55 and women over 50 can join the club for $20 when they sign up to bowl. According to club officer Rick Lazaro, the club already has 66 men and women signed up for Saturday’s event. Black Oak Lanes has allotted 20 lanes for 80 bowlers in the tournament, so you’re strongly encouraged to enter early to avoid being shut out.

Tournament entry fee is $40 for four games of qualifying with a stepladder for the top three qualifiers. Contact Dave Brown at 209 549-2510 to sign up.

Yosemite senior no-tap – The Bellevue bunch got shut out last Friday at McHenry Bowl’s senior no-tap, but there is still hope for them. This Friday, Yosemite Lanes in Modesto is holding its senior 9-pin no-tap at 1 p.m.

Registration begins at noon for this handicap tournament. High-pot games for men and women are paid out after every game and the total series at the end of the tourney. Entry fee is $13 to roll. To reserve a spot, contact Yosemite at 209-524-9161.

Barcellos at it again – I hear Neill Barcellos rolled another perfect game during his Jubilee league play. This makes No. 11. Barcellos has also tried his luck rolling in PBA Regional tournaments and has fared OK.

Valley Bowl update – After having its roof fall in a month or so ago, it looks as if Valley Bowl in Madera is open even with two lanes still down. It has 16 lanes in operation. No estimate of when the other two will be open. Valley is finishing its summer leagues and taking names for fall leagues.

Remember when – In October 1986, the Bowling News from the Merced-Atwater Women’s Bowling Association begin publishing a monthly newsletter: We hope to inform you of what is happening at all the bowling centers as well as news from your leagues. Boxes and information slips will be available at each bowling center, and we hope you will help us make this an interesting and informative newsletter. Besides just listing high games from your leagues, we would prefer funny and unusual things that happen during the bowling season. We’d also like profiles on some of your league members.

Tenth frame – We have lost another member of our association’s Hall of Fame in Alice Koehn, who passed away at age 80. She was the 17th woman to be inducted into the Hall, in 2006 in the ability category.

A longtime top bowler in the area, Koehn averaged 170-plus for years. In the 1970s, she rolled in the Bellevue Bowl women’s scratch league. Her best year I found was in 1982, when she carried a 181 average.

During her career, she rolled a 700 series (a 704), which few women have done.

She was a longtime member of the Twilighters league with husband Kay on Thursday afternoons at Castle Lanes before it closed. She then moved over to Bellevue on Thursdays. She also bowled in the Guys and Dolls on Tuesday night at Bellevue with her husband.

There have been only three husband-and-wife duos inducted into the Hall: Sharon and Preston Roper, Karen and Keith Hunter, and Alice and Kay Koehn.
