College Roundup: UC Merced basketball teams both open season with 2-0 records.

The UC Merced women’s basketball team improved to 2-0 for the first time in the program’s history with a 78-62 win over Warner Pacific on Saturday.

Christina Castro led the No. 24 ranked Bobcats with 23 points. Zaikay Williams added 18 points, seven steals and six assists for UC Merced.

The Bobcats defense came away with 17 steals and helped force Warner Pacific into 34 turnovers.

Men’s Basketball

UC Merced 107, West Coast Baptist 61 in Lancaster – The UC Merced men’s basketball team is also off to their best start at 2-0 after winning two games at the Frank Dye Classic. Aaron Laflin and Cole Taira each scored 23 points for the Bobcats. Derek E’denchukwu added 15 points and 10 rebounds for UC Merced.

The Bobcats make 41 of 69 shots from the floor, including 8 of 16 from beyond the three-point line.

Women’s Volleyball

UC Merced 3, Pacific Union 1 in Merced – Rachael Schaefer recorded 15 kills and Jaysonna Johnson added 11 kills and six blocks as the Bobcats defeated Pacific Union 25-18, 25-13, 20-25, 25-20 on Hostetler Court. Jade Fachin and Emily Romo chipped in with 10 kills each for UC Merced (7-5 Cal Pac).

Women’s Soccer

UC Merced 1, UC Santa Cruz 0 in Santa Cruz – Noodles Sidhu scored the only goal of the game and the Bobcats recorded their second clean slate in two games. UC Merced outshot Santa Cruz 20 to 6 in the game.
