Roundup: Merced College scores 10 runs in win. Washington records triple-double for MC.
The Merced College baseball team jumped out to a big lead early and then held on for a 10-8 win over Solano College on Saturday at Blue Devil Diamond.
Merced College improved to 2-0 on the season.
Tyler Butterfield highlighted a 4-run outburst in the first inning for the Blue Devils with a two-run single.
Jesus Duran finished with three hits, two stolen bases and two runs scored to lead the offense for MC. Ryan Frakes added a pair of hits, including a triple. Frakes drove in one run and scored twice.
Jefferson Gregory made the start, pitching five innings to get the win. Gregory scattered six hits and gave up three runs.
Merced College built a 10-3 lead after seven innings, but Solano made it close at the end with four runs in the eight inning.
Ruben Sanchez came on in the eighth to get out of a jam and gave up one run in the ninth to pick up the save for the Blue Devils.
Women’s Basketball
Merced 97, Porterville 37 in Merced – Trinity Washington finished one point shy of a quadruple-double. The 5-foot-2 sophomore settled for a triple-double with nine points, 10 steals, 11 assists and 17 rebounds as the Lady Blue Devils stretched their win streak to nine consecutive games. Merced College improved to 21-3 overall and 7-0 in the Central Valley Conference.
UC Merced 67, California State University-Maritime 61 in Vallejo – Christina Castro became the Bobcats’ all-time career assists leader after finishing with six assists to go a long with her seven rebounds and five points. Castro has 294 career assists. She also went over 1,000 career points last week.
Junior Mia Shannon led th Bobcats with 18 points and eight rebounds. UC Merced improved to 15-7 overall and 7-1 in the California Pacific Conference.
Men’s Basketball
UC Merced 73, California State University-Maritime 71 in Vallejo – Cole Taira led the way for the Bobcats (10-10 overall, 6-2 CPC) with 21 points. Derek E’denchukwu added 13 points and nine rebounds for UC Merced. The Bobcats shot 51 percent from the field and made 10 3-pointers in the game.
Men’s Volleyball
Hope International University 3, UC Merced 1 in Merced – Senior Cole Smith paced the Bobcats with 14 kills in a 25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 25-13 loss at home. Freshman Ryan Steele recorded 1 assists as the Bobcats dropped to 2-4 on the season.
