Blue Devils strike for two runs in the ninth to defeat Canada. MC women fall to COS.
Tyler Butterfiled hit a two-run double in the ninth inning as the Merced College baseball team defeated Canada College 3-2 on Saturday.
Drew Trahan picked up the win in relief for the Blue Devils. Chase Whitaker pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.
Dylan Jackson picked up three hits for the MC offense and Omar Sanchez added two hits.
The Blue Devils improved to 3-1 this season.
Women’s Basketball
College of the Sequoias 65, Merced College 56 in Visalia – The Giants snapped the Lady Blue Devils’ 10 game winning streak and handed MC its first Central Valley Conference loss.
Zharia McCollum led COS (23-3, 7-2 CVC) with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks.
Trinity Washington paced Merced College (22-4, 8-1 CVC) with 22 points, 9 rebounds and 8 steals.
Men’s Basketball
College of the Sequoias 88, Merced College 48 in Visalia – Isaiah Johnson poured in 25 points as the Giants routed the Blue Devils. Chris Roberson led MC with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical 64, UC Mercd 60 in Mesa, Ariz. – Aubrey Hayes scored 20 points as the Bobcats (16-8, 8-2 California Pacific Conference) lost their second conference game.
Mia Shannon added 13 points and 11 rebounds for UC Merced.
Softball
Folsom Lake 2, Merced College 1 in Merced – The She-Devils lost in extra innings despite a strong pitching performance from Christiane Grijalva. The freshman right-hander struck out nine in eight innings.
Melanie Silva went 1-for-3 at the plate and scored MC’s lone run in the fifth inning on an error. Alina Bernal had two hits for the She-Devils.
San Jose City 3, Merced College 1 in Merced – The Jaguars scored three runs in the sixth inning to spoil a good effort from She-Devil starter Cassie Gasper.
Gasper struck out eight and gave up only one earned run on two hits in seven innings of work.
Gasper also knocked in MC’s only run of the game. Melanie Silva went 3-for-4 at the top of the order and scored a run for the She-Devils.
