Merced College football struggles offensively in blowout loss to Foothill College

It was a rough night for the Merced College offense as the Blue Devils picked up just five first downs and 100 yards of offense in a 49-7 loss to Foothill College on Saturday night in Los Gatos.

Foothill jumped out to an early 21-0 lead in the second quarter and never looked back.

Jayden Frazier started the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run for the Owls (2-0). Gabe Reclusado then returned a Jacob Bettencourt interception 78 yards for a touchdown.

Elijah Thomas then hauled in a 23 yard touchdown Antonio Gonzalez to extend the lead to 21-0 with 14:46 left in the second quarter.

Merced College’s lone touchdown came on a 93-yard interception return by Jeremiah Robinson that cut the lead to 21-7 with 7:33 left in the first half.

It was all Foothill from there.

Alex Murrell finished with five catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Owls offense.

Bettencourt completed 6 of 13 passes for 36 yards and two interceptions for the Blue Devils (1-1).

Jaylen Thao-Booth led the MC defense with nine tackles. Youlas Dickson finished with eight tackles.

Merced College will host Los Medanos on Saturday at 7 p.m.
