College roundup: Bobcat soccer teams stumble, but volleyball advances
The UC Merced men’s soccer team got off to a nightmarish start, surrendering a goal four minutes into Thursday’s California Pacific Conference Tournament semifinal.
The first postseason game for the Bobcats (12-6) didn’t go much better from there as top-seeded Marymount California cruised into the championship game with a 5-1 victory. Brian Chongtoua set up Cruz Trenado for UCM’s goal.
Women’s soccer
▪ Embry-Riddle 1, UC Merced 0 in Atherton – Bobcats goalkeeper Maggie Morales made five saves, but the only shot to slip past her proved to be the difference as UCM (10-5-3) fell in a Cal Pac Tournament semifinal.
Volleyball
▪ UC Merced 3, La Sierra 1 in Riverside – The fourth-seeded Bobcats knocked off the top seed and won the first postseason game in school history behind freshman Rachael Schaefer’s match-high 20 kills. UCM (11-17) will face No. 2 Menlo in Saturday’s Cal Pac championship match.
Women’s basketball
▪ Merced College 58, Ohlone 51 (OT) in Merced – Mele Tupouata’s game-high 21 points and eight rebounds helped the Lady Devils (1-2) rally for an overtime victory in the first round of their Coca-Cola Shootout. MC will play Cypress in a 7:30 p.m. game at El Capitan High today because of a scheduling conflict with MC volleyball. The 5:30 game also will be at El Cap.
