KU Jayhawks’ Bill Self says Final Four berth takes on extra meaning since dad’s passing

Even before the Jayhawks had a chance to cut the nets to celebrate their Final Four berth on Sunday, KU men’s basketball coach Bill Self admitted this one meant a little something extra.

After Kansas defeated Miami 76-50 in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday CBS Sports broadcaster Kevin Harlan noted Self’s father, Bill Self, Sr., had passed away on Dec. 31 at the age of 82.

Self was asked about it during an interview on CBS Sports, and he admitted Sunday’s victory and the Final Four appearance meant a little more to him.

“It’s a special year for me and my family, with my dad passing, and that was his motto: ‘Don’t worry about the mules, just load the wagon,’” Self said.

KU students at Allen Fieldhouse held a massive sign with that quote during the Jayhawks’ first game following the passing of Self Sr., a 94-91 KU double-overtime win over Texas Tech.

Here is how Self celebrated the Final Four berth with his players on Sunday in Chicago.
