UC Merced guard makes history with two 30-point performances

UC Merced men’s basketball player Sterling McClanahan came off the bench to record two big scoring games last week and the result made program history.

McClanahan became the first player from UC Merced to be named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Last Tuesday, the Fairfield native, a 6-foot-3-inch guard, scored 30 points and had a career-high eight rebounds in an 89-83 overtime loss to Cal State Monterey Bay.

McClanahan, a junior, scored a career-high 34 points in an 80-66 win over Cal State San Marcos on Saturday. He scored 29 in the second half.

McClanahan was the first player in the CCAA with two straight 30-point games on the road since Chico State’s Jojo Murphy in 2022.

McClanahan, a junior college transfer from Las Positas College in Livermore, is ranked third in the CCAA in scoring with 16.8 points a game.

UC Merced (7-11, 5-9 CCAA) plays host to Cal Poly Humboldt on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
