UC Merced track star has another big weekend; his 200 was especially impressive

To say that UC Merced junior Martel Fields is off to a hot start this season would be an understatement.

Fields was named the Central California Athletic Association men’s track and field Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week for his performance at the Wildcat Invitation at Chico State last weekend.

He’s the first UC Merced athlete to ever earn multiple CCAA weekly awards. The CCAA announced the honor Tuesday.

A week after an impressive showing at the Kim Duyst Invitational at CSU Stanislaus, Fields was even more impressive in Chico.

Fields, a Long Beach native, won the 100 meters, 200 meters and led the Bobcats’ 4x100 relay team to victory.

His time of 20.91 seconds in the 200 hit the NCAA Division II provisional time and was the second-fastest time in the nation in D-II this season.

He ran a 10.54 in the 100, the fourth-fastest time in the CCAA this season. His 4x100 relay squad with Naseem Hassaan, Medard Idi, and Nyj Joiner took first in 41.18.

UC Merced next competes at the West Coast Relays in Clovis on March 28. The event is hosted by Fresno State.

The Bobcats have stepped up to the CCAA and Division II level this season.

Fields graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School before coming to UC Merced.
