The final week of the season brings us rivalry matchups. A glance at the big games.
The final week of the regular season is here and that means rivalry week.
We’ve got Merced High squaring off against Golden Valley. Buhach Colony facing its crosstown rival in Atwater. The Crosstown Clash should be a spirited matchup as Los Banos travels to Pacheco.
Here’s a quick look at some of the top rivalry matchups for Friday night. All kickoffs are scheduled for 7 p.m.
Battle for the Mayor’s Cup
Who: Merced (3-6 2-3 CCC) at Golden Valley (0-9, 0-5)
Where: Veterans Stadium
At Stake: Not only are the Cougars trying to avoid an 0-10 season they are trying to stop Merced’s 11-game winning streak in this rivalry.
Neither team is headed to the playoffs so this becomes the playoff game for both teams.
Merced leads the all-time series 15-8.
Bloss Bowl XII
Who: Buhach Colony (6-3, 4-1 CCC) at Atwater (3-6, 2-3)
Where: Dave Honey Stadium
At Stake: The Thunder are looking to improve their seed for the playoffs. Buhach Colony still has an outside shot at a Central California Conference championship it can win and Pitman upsets Turlock on Friday night in the Harvest Bowl.
Buhach Colony owns a 7-4 advantage in the all-time series, including a 72-0 win over Atwater last season. The Thunder scored 47 points in the first quarter last year.
Crosstown Clash
Who: Los Banos (8-1, 3-1 WAC) at Pacheco (5-4, 3-1)
Where: Veterans Stadium (Pacheco)
At Stake: Both these teams are likely headed to the playoffs. Most projections have the Panthers making the playoffs with the five wins.
Los Banos holds a 4-2 advantage in the series. It was the Tigers defeating Pacheco 35-25 last season.
Both teams feature high-powered offenses so there could be a lot of points in this matchup.
Battle for the Wooden Chief
Who: Orestimba (9-0, 6-0 SL) at Gustine (8-1, 6-0)
Where: Gustine High
At Stake: The winner wraps up a Southern League championship and the right to keep the Wooden Chief, a 5-foot wooden sculpted statue.
A big crowd is expected as these two Westside rivals clash.
Gustine holds a slight 35-34-2 edge in the series, but Orestimba has won 10 of the last 12 games.
