CIF announces there will be no spring sports section playoffs or state championships

The California Interscholastic Federation announced on Friday that all section and state playoffs and championships for spring sports have been canceled due to the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The CIF, which is the governing body of high school sports in California, issued a release on Friday afternoon after consulting with the 10 section commissioners throughout the state.

“We understand this is disappointing for everyone involved in education-based athletics and empathize with our student-athletes and all who are impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak,” said CIF Director Ron Noectti. “As always, our top priority is everyone’s ongoing health and safety during this challenging time, and we all look forward to the day when education-based athletics resumes.”

The decision means no Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs for baseball, softball, boys tennis, boys golf and boys volleyball. There will be no state championships for track or swimming.

The news comes just two days after Gov. Gavin Newsom announced schools should remained closed through the rest of the school year. On Tuesday, the Merced Union High School District followed Newsom’s lead and announced the temporary closure will be extended through the rest of the school year.
