El Capitan High sophomore Rob Carpenter broke a Central California Conference swimming record that stood for 17 years at the CCC Championships this past week.

Carpenter, 15, recorded a time of 46.91 in the 100-yard freestyle, breaking the record held by former Golden Valley swimmer Brian Carter.

“The record was something I was shooting for,” Carpenter said. “My sister was coaching at the meet and she came over and told me about the record before the race.”

Carpenter’s father Mike is part of a Merced High 200 yard medley relay team that still holds the CCC record.

Rob, who was one of the top youth swimmers in the nation competing with the Merced Skimmers, says it’s an honor to see his name in the record book.

“It’s really nice to know my name will be there until somebody beats it eventually,” Carpenter said. “I’m shooting for other records, maybe the 200 freestyle or 500 freestyle. Maybe some other strokes.”

Carpenter also won the 200 freestyle race with a time of 1:47.51.

The Merced High boys and girls both won the CCC team championships. The Bears boys collected 534 points with El Capitan finishing second with 463. The Merced girls racked up 488 points to edge out El Capitan (475).

The Merced boys were led by Logan McIntosh, Easton Hamm and Daniel Martin, who all won two individual events. Hamm won the 50 freestyle (22.57) and the 500 freestyle (5:12.50). Martin won the 100 butterfly (54.06) and the 100 backstroke (55.88). McIntosh won the 200 individual medley (2:09.12) and the diving (421.20).

The Merced girls were led by Emily Trejo, who won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.75 and Jasmine Barragan, who won the diving with a score of 247.90. The Bears also swept the three relay events.

Golden Valley’s Libby Hamilton won two individual titles with wins in the 100 butterfly (1:03.76) and the 100 freestyle (57.11). El Capitan’s Chloe Dingeldine also won two titles with victories in the 500 freestyle (5:46.01) and the 200 freestyle (2:07.33).
