Trent Calvert grew up on the Dos Palos High football sidelines, and was a ball boy for the Broncos during the Mike Sparks’ coaching era.

Now a junior at Dos Palos, Calvert is rewriting the Broncos passing record books.

Calvert broke the school’s all-time passing yards and passing touchdowns record on Friday night during Dos Palos’ 47-35 win over Immanuel in the final week of the spring football season.

The two records belonged to two well known Broncos players in Sparks and Mike Van Worth.

“Oh man, those guys are legends,” said Dos Palos coach Rob Calvert, who is Trent’s father. “They are the best of the best. They are both a big part of the Dos Palos tradition. Both are class acts. I think it’s cool that Mike Sparks played for his dad (Bill) as head coach and Trent plays for me as head coach. It’s pretty special for Trent and me.”

Sparks held the passing yards record of 3,727 career yards, which was set in 1969-71. Van Worth threw for 44 career touchdowns from 1997-99.

“Those names mean a lot,” Trent Calvert said. “There’s been a lot of good players who have come through Dos Palos. I was looking forward to breaking those records.”

Calvert threw for 341 yards and four touchdowns against Immanuel on Friday. The junior has racked up 1,356 yards and 14 touchdowns during the Broncos’ five-game spring season.

“These were goals that I set after I threw for 2,600 yards as a sophomore,” Trent said.

Rob Calvert said Sparks called to congratulate Trent on breaking his record over the weekend. Sparks wasn’t only one of the top quarterbacks in Dos Palos history, but he also retired as the winningest coach in Broncos history, compiling a 209-68-2 record in 22 seasons.

Trent Calvert has drawn interest from some NAIA schools and Division II and III smaller college programs. He’s been invited to compete at some quarterback camps this spring and summer.

Trent Calvert has now thrown for 3,987 yards in his three-year high school career and 48 touchdowns. He still has another year to go.

“My goal for next year is to throw for 3,000 yards and 50 touchdowns,” he said.
