After playing key roles on offense, defense, Merced standout named MVP by CCC coaches
It’s not uncommon for high school quarterbacks to also play defense. However, rarely are quarterbacks asked to also play middle linebacker.
That’s what Merced High coach Rob Scheidt asked of his son Seth Scheidt this spring.
Scheidt played key roles on both sides of the ball to help lead the Bears to a Central California Conference championship. The CCC coaches selected Seth Scheidt as the CCC Most Valuable Player after the five-game spring season.
“It was tough on him, but I didn’t realize how tough it would be on me and our defensive coaches,” said Rob Scheidt, who was also selected as the CCC Coach of the Year. “There was no opportunity in the game to say here’s what they’re doing, we need to do this because he was always on the field. It made it tough to make corrections and adjustments.
“I don’t know if it’s something you can do in a 10-game season. I guess we’ll find out this fall.”
Scheidt threw two late touchdowns against Hilmar to help the Bears finish 3-0 in the CCC.
Hilmar quarterback Seth Miguel was named the CCC’s Best Offensive Player by the CCC coaches after he threw for 711 yards and seven touchdowns to go a long with 195 rushing yards and two scores.
Buhach Colony senior Nate Ruiz was selected as the Best Defensive Player, Merced’s Jaylen Thao-Booth was named the Lineman of the Year and Hilmar’s Andre Alves was picked as the Kicker/Specialist of the Year.
