Roundup: Dos Palos erases early deficit to defeat Firebaugh in WSL showdown
Dos Palos High senior running back Abraham Landino did the heavy lifting for the Broncos on Friday night, carrying the ball 30 times for 185 yards and a touchdown in a crucial 24-21 victory over Firebaugh at Ike Frankian Field.
The win gives the Broncos (8-0 overall, 3-0 West Sierra League) the inside track to the WSL championship with two games remaining in the regular season.
Dos Palos had to comeback from a 14-0 deficit after Edgar Cuevas hauled in a 3-yard touchdown pass from Austin Garcia and Danny Olivera scored on a 36-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
Landino sparked the comeback with a 35-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to cut the lead to 14-7.
The Broncos defense set up the tying score with a fumble recovery at the Eagles’ 10-yard line. Dos Palos quarterback Trent Calvert then scored on a 10-yard run to tie the game at 14-14 with 2:42 left in the first half.
Kevin Watkins nailed a 37-yard field goal with 9 seconds left in the second quarter to give the Broncos a 17-14 lead at the half.
Calvert extended the lead to 24-14 with a 2-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter.
The Eagles (6-2, 2-1 WSL) cut the lead to 24-21 with a screen pass that went 21-yards for a touchdown by Jaekwon Haynie early in the fourth quarter.
The Broncos defense again came up with a big turnover to preserve the victory when safety Derek Von Allman intercepted a pass deep in their own territory with just over 2 minutes left in the game.
Patterson 59, Golden Valley 43 — Eleazar Garza threw three touchdowns and ran for touchdowns of 50 and 83 yards for the Cougars, who dropped to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the Central California Conference.
Garza connected on two scoring strikes of 36 and 41 yards with sophomore receiver Jonah White.
Atwater 21, Central Valley 14 — The Falcons trailed by one point entering the fourth quarter but were able to pull out their second win of the season.
Omar Navarro scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to give the Falcons the lead with 8:32 left in the game.
Atwater quarterback Tyler Parr threw touchdown passes to James Thomas and Colton Dukes for the Falcons other two scores. Atwater improves to 2-7 overall and 2-3 in the CCC.
Hilmar 28, Hughson 0 — Derek Taylor hauled in three touchdown catches from Hilmar quarterback Jason Pimentel to snap a two-game losing streak.
Taylor scored on a touchdown passes of 35, 24, and 6 yards.
Los Banos 55, Ceres 42 — Victor Perez and Aiden Ramirez both scored two rushing touchdowns for the Tigers, who outlasted the Bulldogs in a shootout.
Los Banos quarterback David Herrera also tossed two touchdowns and ran for two more scores as the Tigers scored a season-high 55 points.
Los Banos improves to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.
Gustine 31, Le Grand 28 (2 OT) — Danny Hernandez kicked a 39-yard field goal in the second overtime to deliver the victory for the Reds (3-4 overall, 3-2 Southern League).
Hernandez also scored on touchdown runs in the fourth quarter and the first overtime.
Le Grand quarterback Julian Bucio threw four touchdowns, including a pair to receiver Carlos Castaneda.
Chowchilla 47, Yosemite 0 — Andrew Lopez rushed for 207 yards and three touchdowns as the Tribe (1-7, 1-1 North Sequoia League) picked up their first win of the season.
Mason Bell added an 80-yard interception return for a score for Chowchilla. Bell has three interceptions in the last two games.
