Roundup: Golden Valley, Merced both win big with the Battle for the Mayor’s Cup next week
The Golden Valley High football team kept their playoff hopes alive with a 60-0 rout of El Capitan at Veterans Stadium on Friday night.
Senior running back Jabari Phillips rushed for four touchdowns on runs of 6, 30, 13 and 73 yards.
Sophomore receiver Jonah White caught a touchdown catch of 55 yards and threw a touchdown of 52 yards.
The Cougars defense also scored twice with Jamarcus Phillips and Josiah Gonzalez both returned fumbles for touchdowns.
Golden Valley (4-4 overall, 3-1 Central California Conference) will play Merced next week in the regular season finale.
Merced 54, Central Valley 6 — The Bears won their third consecutive game to improve to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the CCC.
Chase Smith started the scoring for Merced with a 45-yard touchdown run and the Cyrus Amos scored on a double-pass for 55 yards.
The Bears led 48-0 by halftime.
Patterson 51, Buhach Colony 20 — The Tigers pulled away in the fourth quarter to clinch the CCC championship.
Buhach Colony (2-6, 2-2 CCC) trailed 28-20 behind three touchdowns by Jaxson Percoats. The junior scored on a 21-yard run, 25-yard catch and an 80-yard punt return.
The Tigers (8-2, 6-0 CCC) outscored the Thunder 23-0 in the fourth quarter.
Los Banos 35, Lathrop 14 — Tigers senior running back Adrian Ramirez rushed for 255 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries to help Los Banos improve to 4-4 overall and 4-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.
Ramirez also had 10 tackles and two fumble recoveries on defense.
Israel Razo also led the Tigers defense with 12 tackles, a fumble recovery and a sack.
Pacheco 40, Beyer 12 — The Panthers snapped a four-game losing streak with a win over the Patriots. Pacheco improved to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the WAC.
Hilmar 65, Modesto Christian 0 — The Yellowjackets (7-2, 3-2) had an easy night in a Trans-Valley League game against the Crusaders (1-7, 1-5). Hilmar closes out the regular season at Riverbank (0-8, 0-5) next Friday.
Livingston 56, Riverbank 0 — The host Wolves (6-3, 3-2) rolled to victory against the winless Bruins (0-8) ahead of their regular-season finale against Escalon. Livingston lost to Hilmar (3-2) by just four points and Ripon (4-1) by 13 and looks to dash Escalon’s hope of an outright TVL title.
Delhi 56, Le Grand 38 — Angel Ramirez scored six touchdowns, including a 99-yard interception return to lead the Hawks to a win.
Ramirez scored on runs of 9, 7, 28, 61 and 46 yards.
Le Grand quarterback Julian Bucio threw four touchdown passes.
Mariposa 36, Waterford 35 — Waterford’s first loss of the season came in stunning fashion. The Wildcats (8-1, 5-1 Southern League) took a 35-14 lead with 6 minutes, 17 seconds left in the game, and Waterford took over the ball with the same lead with 4:34 to play after intercepting a Mariposa pass. But Mariposa rallied for three touchdowns, converted two onside kicks, and scored the game-winning 2-point conversion with 28 seconds left in the game.
Ripon Christian 24, Gustine 7 — The visiting Knights (6-3, 3-2 Southern Athletic League) trailed at halftime 7-3 before rallying to beat the Reds (3-5, 3-3). RC took a 9-7 lead in the third quarter on a blocked punt return for a touchdown and extended the margin with an interception return for a touchdown to make it 17-7.
Big Valley Christian 27, Stone Ridge Christian 20 — The host Lions won their second straight game to improve to 3-6 on the season. They close out the regular season next week on Saturday against Delta Charter.
Dos Palos 24, Coalinga 6 — Broncos quarterback Trent Calvert rushed for 71 yards and two touchdowns as the Broncos improved to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the West Sierra League.
The victory clinched a WSL championship, which extends Dos Palos’ state record to 51 all-time league championships.
Broncos running back Abraham Landino rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown.
Torres 28, Chowchilla 20 — The Tribe dropped to 1-8 on the season and will close out the year next week at Liberty.
