Merced County high school student accepts equestrian scholarship to Fresno State
Golden Valley High School Alison Heupel started riding horses when she was 3 years old. She’s always had a love for animals, showing them at a young age, owning her first horse at 9 years old and competing in just about every kind riding event possible.
That’s why Friday afternoon was so special.
In the Golden Valley High library in front of family and friends, Heupel signed her national letter of intent to accept an equestrian scholarship to Fresno State. “I just fell in love with it and I told myself this is what my future looks like,” Heupel said.
Equestrian scholarships are rare. Fresno State and UC Davis are the only California universities that field equestrian teams. Heupel had talks with UC Davis, but felt Fresno State was the right fit for her.
Heupel has competed in a national circuit the past couple years. It was during one of those competitions where she met her future college coach Eric Hubbard.
“Recruiting is similar to other sports,” Heupel said. “I filled out a questionnaire, I met the requirements and met the coach while competing at a World Championship in Oklahoma. We started talking and having conversations and eventually the conversations led to a scholarship offer.”
Heupel officially committed to Fresno State on Jan. 3.
She really felt included when she met her future teammates. She got a good vibe from the coach and she likes that she’s staying close to home.
“I like the high standard that is set for the girls,” Heupel said. “Being just OK is not good enough. I want that to be part of my day. I want to be pushed.”
Heuple compiled a 4.17 GPA at Golden Valley and plans to major in animal science.
Heuple it said it was humbling that Golden Valley set up a signing ceremony for her to share the moment with people close to her.
“I didn’t expect them to do this,” she said. “It’s not even a school sport. I’m so happy my school helped me celebrate this moment.”
