Golden Valley’s Severo, Merced’s Perez-Zoghbi both qualify for state track meet
Golden Valley High senior Jazmine Severo and Merced High senior Isabel Perez-Zoghbi are headed to the CIF State Track Meet next meet at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
Severo finished second at the Sac-Joaquin Section Master Track Meet in the high jump at UC Davis on Thursday.
Severo cleared a mark of 5-foot-5 to punch her ticket to the state meet. Whitney’s Ashanti Elie won the high jump with a mark of 5-6.
Perez-Zoghbi finished third in the 300-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 44.06 seconds. The top three finishers in each event qualify for the state meet.
Perez-Zoghbi will be competing at the state level for the third time this school year. The senior also advanced to the state Cross Country Championships and the State Wrestling Championships.
There were plenty of other impressive finishes by Merced-area athletes at UC Davis.
Hilmar junior Derek Taylor finished fourth in the high jump by clearing 6-2.
Atwater’s Leonardo Cebrero finished fifth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 39.95 seconds, which was a personal best.
Pacheco’s Joey Costa placed eighth in the long jump (20-11.5) and 11th in the triple jump (42-9).
Golden Valley’s Delbert Davis finished 10th in the long jump with a mark of 20-10.25. Cougars teammate JaMarcus Phillips finished 10th in the discus with a throw of 133-06 on Thursday.
Merced’s Sydney Perez placed eighth in the high jump by clearing 4-11.
